Each vehicle has a special number that can be very useful to know in the event that a motor vehicle is stolen. Each motor vehicle, when rolled off the production line, will have somewhere on its chassis, a number that is called the Vehicle Identification Number or VIN number.

A car’s vehicle identification number (VIN) is the identifying code for your specific automobile. It is your car’s fingerprint. It sets that particular vehicle apart from the millions of other vehicles out there, even if there’s another with of the same make, model, year and colour.

Recently, the VIN has been represented by 17 digit characters. It displays a motor vehicle’s uniqueness as well as the manufacturer who made the vehicle, and provides a method to trace your car from the factory to the junk yard.

The VIN on the vehicle can be used to track recalls, registrations, warranty claims, thefts and insurance coverage.
