FPV GT

Why, oh why did they choose a name as bland and unmemorable as GT for this magnificent muscle car? Surely something as powerful as this should be given a name like “Hurricane,” “Tyrannosaurus” or “Hercules”. But no, the FPV GT is what it is called, and the FPV GT is the name to remember. Maybe it’s because the car can speak for itself and not need a fancy name or label to impress potential buyers.

The looks of the FPV GT, as you can imagine, mean business. Just run your eye over the low, aggressive stance; the hypnotizing headlights and the enormous grille in that predatory airdam. This is a car that’s all about presence, and even the colour range gives off this air. No subtle muted pastels here: the colours are bold, ranging from the yellow-orange Octane to the jewel-like sapphire of Sensation… with characteristic body stripes on the GT (option) and GT-P (no-cost option), again offering a range of choices. The FPV GTE leaves off the body stripes – you’re not going to have much of a chance to look at them unless this car is standing still. All most people are going to see of the FPV GT is the rear view – which still looks powerful and businesslike.

It’s all about what’s under the bonnet of the FPV GT: the Boss 315 powerplant, which is a 5.4 litre quad-cam 32 valve V8 engine. Hold onto your hats, ladies and gents, as this one has all the power a human could want outside of an aeroplane: a maximum power of 315 kW at 6500 rpm (which gives the Boss 315 its name) and push-you-back torque of 551 Nm at 4750 rpm. All this is on tap super quick with the twin throttle blades and is put at your disposal either via the 6-speed manual or the 6-speed automatic transmission with sequential sports shift. Perhaps we’ll draw a quiet veil over the FPV GT’s fuel economy and the CO2 emissions, but if this is your main concern in a car, look elsewhere: the FPV GT is about raw, unadulterated power and performance.

The performance in the regular FPV GT is colossal, sharp and responsive, but this is brought up another notch in the FPV GT-P, where the P stands for Performance (in the more luxurious FPV GTE, the E probably stands for Executive or Elite). In the GTP and GT-E, the handling is complemented by the very necessary Brembo brakes front (6 piston callipers) and rear (4 piston callipers), which can be just discernable behind the 19” alloy wheels (the FPV GT has the 4 calliper Brembos at the front and 328 x 26mm cross drilled ventilated rear rotors with single red piston callipers at the back) – you need a lot of control to rein in this warhorse.

But before you press the FPV starter button and make the FPV GT roar into life, you might want to take a look around the cabin before the real fun begins. When you’re sitting in the driver’s seat, you will be embraced by the extremely comfortable FPV sports seats – performance seats on the GTP and luxury Nudo-leather seats in the GTE (which come in black or in red, and embossed with the FPV GTE logo). You can fiddle around with the adjustable lumbar support, and with the power seat (4-way, 6-way or 8-way, depending on whether you have the GT, the GTP or the GTE). You will also be reassured by the driver and front passenger front and side airbags, and the curtain airbags – there are some things even the EBD, traction control, Dynamic Stability Control and the top-notch handling can’t quite get you out of.

Press the button and away you go. You may, of course, just want to listen to the roar of the FPV GT’s big Boss 315 engine doing its thing and concentrate on the exhilaration of acceleration. But alternatively, you may want to listen to what’s available through the sound system for CDs, which comes as standard with at 7-inch colour display, an MP3-compatible auxiliary jack and iPod integration, and Bluetooth mobile integration.

In this case, the name of the FPV GT doesn’t say it all. Enjoy the ride!
