Underpinning the Subaru Liberty 3.6R Premium is a symmetrical AWD system that is put through its paces via a 5-speed SPORTSHIFT automatic. Quick engine response and a slick shifting automatic make the 3.6R premium a real delight to drive. Aggressive power from the engine is contrived inside the horizontally opposed Boxer six-cylinder petrol engine. This is the biggest engine we’ve seen inside the Liberty body, and the pace at which you can cover the ground is very agreeable. Coming out from a very tight corner and then opening the Subaru Liberty 3.6R right out on the straight revealed awesome acceleration. It was no surprise to see the 0-100 km/h sprint time being performed in just seven seconds. Maximum torque figures of 350 Nm at 4400 rpm were experienced in a commanding display of grunty motorway work and effortless hill climbs. Even with four fatties on board and an array of baggage in the boot, the Subaru Liberty 3.6R was decisively rapid.

In the handling stakes, you can rate the Subaru Liberty 3.6R Premium as one of the best all-round chassis’ in the medium-sized sedan bracket. With the front suspension using a McPherson strut type independent suspension, and the rear suspension owning a double wishbone type independent suspension set-up, the recipe is a tasty blend of free flowing on-road dynamics that need only be reigned on the occasional extreme corner. Stopping power is excellent, thanks to superb four-wheel ventilated disc brakes and ABS which boasts a 4-channel, 4-sensor system using Electronic Brakeforce Distribution. A quick test drive will reveal just how safe and secure the Subaru Liberty 3.6R Premium feels on any given road surface.

All-round safety is first rate. Expect to find all the goodies in the safety list. The five-star occupant safety rating that the Liberty range has held since 2004 means that the latest model only builds on this achievement.
