Citroen DS5

Style isn't just for the Italians! Citroen DS5 style is luxurios and comfortable.

Citroen design has always created plenty of engaging forms for an array of exciting recent vehicles. The all new Citroen DS5 is another one of those high-class, exotic designs that is hard to match by any other car manufacturer. I think it’s the way Citroen manages to come up with a design that looks different, remains elegant and sporty, and has flair down to the smallest detail. Also when you slip into new Citroen cars, like the new DS5, you find that the interior is simply gorgeous and effortlessly stylish.

One of the things you could say about the new Citroen DS5 is that it’s almost an SUV, but it’s not. Certainly, the DS5 is tall, but the vehicle also fronts with broad-shoulders and then tapers off at the back end. So you could also suggest that the DS5 design is a cross between an MPV and a wagon. However, one thing is for sure; Citroen’s DS5 looks so much more athletic and sporty, compared with the likes of a Peugeot 3008 MPV or Volvo XC90 SUV. I think I’d place it in the high-riding Touring wagon category – of which there are not many other comparisons.

Power comes from a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine that has been co-developed by BMW and PSA. Spinning very willingly through to high engine revs, the Citroen DS5 1.6-litre Turbo gets along quite nicely and makes use of its 149 kW of power in an efficient, unruffled manner. There is a 122 kW, 2.0-litre turbo-diesel hybrid engine that is phenomenally economical to run. So do check both versions out before you drive, as they both are great units for the DS5. In diesel form, the DS5 can even eclipse the 0-100 km/h sprint in a little over eight seconds.

Watchstrap leather seats make for some of the best looking recliners in the all new Citroen DS5.

Slip inside any of the wide opening doors, and the impression of luxury grabs you quickly. It’s nice to see brown getting a look in again – that’s not to say that brown is one of the only colour choices, as there are plenty of interior mix and matches. One thing I would say, however, is that the Citroen DS5 “watchstrap” heated leather seats (optional) are impressively comfortable. Getting the right position in the Citroen DS5 cockpit is very easy, as the adjustable steering wheel and electronically adjustable seats move limitlessly about the limb-length and body shape of the human frame. The switches, instrumentation and dash design are appropriatel nice to look at, while they have the feel of premium quality.

The Citroen DS5 has a big centre console that houses some of the more important features like the high definition computer screen. Boasting many features to play with on the seven-inch screen, music streaming, Bluetooth communications and mobile phone connections are some of the fancy features that are easy to access through this tech set-up. For those who love music, you’ll be incredibly satisfied by the optional ten-speaker Denon Hi-Fi system. Even the standard six-speaker system has amazing sound.

Noteworthy, is the amount of space in the Citroen DS5 cabin. It’s easy for front and rear occupants to get themselves into a relaxed comfortable position for the long journey ahead. Perhaps, if there was a mild complaint, it would be that the boot space with the rear seats up is on the smaller side – especially in the hybrid version. The location of the hybrid battery and motor assembly under the boot floor compromises the 325-litre load area.

On the road, the Citroen DS5 rides beautifully – even over severely rutted roads. Seventeen or eighteen inch rims are available. Grip is sure, while cornering at speed is held nicely flat and in control. The manual gearbox on the turbo-diesel is easy to change, however I’m a bit of an auto fan, so I do love the way the six-speed auto changes sweetly through the gears.

All-in-all, the new Citroen DS5 is a roomier, more luxurious DS4. Funny that. For a satisfying, comfortable ride, the new DS5 is a real nice cruiser that’s got the make-up for taking interstate travel in its stride.

The current Citroen DS5 models include the:

  • 1.6 Turbo
  • 2.0 Turbo-diesel
