2023 Citroen C5X Wagon/SUV

What Wagon is the suavest?  Now that’s got you thinking, hasn’t it?  Some might say a Skoda Superb or Subaru Outback?  But I’d like to suggest that the 2023 Citroen C5X has to be in the running; and this is why.

First of all price – the brand new Citroen C5 X can be bought for money that isn’t so outlandish you’ll need to sell the house to afford one.  To be able to buy something as nice as the new Citroen C5 X for well under $70k is hugely attractive and will be a deciding factor for the discerning buyer.

What about those looks?  Citroen has designed the C5X to cover the bases of what a combined Sedan, Wagon, and SUV might look like.  The end result is a Wagon shape that resembles the size of a Subaru Outback or Audi Allroad.  The new FWD Citroen C5X has a low-slung roofline and an elevated ride-height, as well as boasting big defined wheel arches to house a set of decent rubber.  All models get 19-inch alloys as standard but can be equipped with larger ones.  Its paw print is wide, and the low stance gives it a capable cornering capacity that impresses.  The 2023 Citroen C5X makes much larger SUVs look top heavy, cumbersome, and porky by comparison.

And it doesn’t stop there.  I love the exterior design.  If you walk around the front of the car, you’ll appreciate the striking twin lines of chrome that incorporate the Citroen logo at their centre.  Running away from the logo’s focal point, the lines run the full width of the car’s face.  The top line wraps around both left and right corners to border the LED DRLs, while the bottom line drops downward at both sides to highlight the trapezoid headlight cluster that’s housed boldly at each end of the bumper.  Citroen has made the bonnet with a very pronounced bulge that makes it look both solid and powerful.

Side on, the 2023 Citroen C5 X has a beautiful chrome strip above the doors, running the full length of the car.  The boot’s glass windows offer the ability to see out when you’re inside the C5X, but no one can see inside.  Then, as you head around the back of the vehicle, the brawny rear-end boasts wrap around LED taillights and a neatly indented lower boot gate panel, sitting nicely over the rear bumper.  A rear tailgate spoiler that protrudes out from the roof is a sleek bit of artwork too.  You get a set of roof rails, and you can even opt for a two-tone colour for the roof.  All in all, the Citroen C5X looks and drives superbly.

I was recently inside a new Audi Q5 S-Line model, and, when comparing this with the Citroen C5X, I was left feeling that the Audi was left wanting in its sense of occasion.  The Citroen C5 X, on the other hand, has an aura about its cabin experience.  The quality is excellent, and the choice of sumptuous materials feels luxurious and upmarket.  Well done, Citroen!

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available on the big touchscreen, the touchscreen being set into the centre of the dash like the sword in the stone.  So, as long as you’re not the true king, it just doesn’t budge, much like the rest of the well-put-together centre console and switchgear, and the rest of the cabin.  The C5X’s digital driver’s display looks great and delivers excellent clarity.  All of the electrics work rapidly and efficiently.  You can easily find your way about the apps and modes on both the touchscreen and the digital driver’s display.  DAB+ digital radio and an 8-speaker sound system deliver a properly good audio experience.

Other features onboard the classy 2023 Citroen C5X include: wireless phone charging and connection, a reversing camera, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, a 12.0-inch media screen, a heated leather steering wheel, a full leather interior, adaptive cruise control, speed sign recognition, a sunroof, auto LED headlights, a head-up display, automatic wipers, satellite navigation, front and rear parking sensors, a space-saver spare tyre, and 360 degree around-view cameras.

Getting comfortable behind the steering wheel is so easy.  The seats themselves are off the top shelf, delivering loads of long-journey support and comfort.  There are even massage functions available for front seat occupants.  The steering wheel adjusts very well indeed, and the C5 X driver’s seat is simply awesome.  All the electronic accessory points impress.  You’ll find points all about the cabin.  Proper climate control knobs, superb storage compartments, cup holders for all, and door bins make life inside a new Citroen C5X easy and practical.

To add to the car’s wonderful comfort, Citroen have looked to bring back the supreme comfort levels of the Citroens of old.  The Citroen C5X delivers a superb ride quality thanks to the use of their hydraulic suspension, their hydraulic suspension stoppers to reduce heavy jolts, and features like a road scanner that scans the road surface ahead so that the suspension can quickly adjust to filter out any of the incoming road surface imperfections.

Available boot space for when the rear seats are up and being used by passengers is 545 litres.  The PHEV version has 485 litres.  Being split-folding, the luggage space grows quickly (up to 1645 litres) as the rear seat is folded down flat.  Boot lids are powered, which is a nice touch.  And then there is the space for occupants.  Rear seat passengers are very well accounted for, with the C5X having loads of head, shoulder, knees and toe space.  I like the quilted stitch, and the interesting soft surface of the seat material – all luxurious and all rather nice.  Two USB ports are available for rear seat occupants and there are isofix anchorage points.

The 2023 Citroen C5X holds a comprehensive list of premium safety features as standard kit.  The FWD Citroen C5 X is built on the same platform as the latest Peugeot 308 and features the same set of engines.  A 95 kW 1.2-litre petrol, a 134 kW 1.6-litre engine, and a 168 kW plug-in hybrid (PHEV) that adds an electric motor and battery to the 1.6-litre petrol motor are the options.  If savings on fuel matters to you, then PHEV models are capable of running up to 60 km on pure electric.  PHEV models are also the quickest, capable of a 0-100 km/h dash in 8 seconds.  It’s extremely comfortable, relaxed, and efficient.  Even the petrol-only versions can return some pretty impressive economy.

A lot of new cars are out there for the buyer who wants something in the spacious wagon/SUV segment.  If you’re after a vehicle that’s very well priced, sleek, spacious enough for a family, and extremely comfortable for those long haul distances, then the 2023 Citroen C5 X needs to be on your radar.
