Citroen, for quite some time now, has been doing extremely well in the crash testing results carried out in Europe, and here in Australia. Of course, this is not really surprising when you have Renault, another French car marquee, doing so very well in crash test safety results, too. The new Citroen C5 Tourer is a talented big wagon that makes for one of the nicest family cars to travel in. Big and sumptuous on the inside, and powerful and safe, you’ll find that time spent travelling onboard the Citroen C5 Tourer is time well spent.
At over 4.8 metres in length, and over 1.8 metres wide at its haunches, room is copious for both occupants and luggage. This sort of room inside the C5 Tourer sets the car up well for a comfortable and relaxed journey for that big annual family getaway or that shopping spree on the town. Loading your stuff into the cavernous boot space is easy via an electric tailgate, and with the rear seats folded flat, the space is massive. You could easily swing a double mattress inside to dodge the overnight charge at the cabins – if it’s just the two of you.
Sit inside the Citroen C5 Tourer, and you’ll be in one of the most elegant and striking new automotive interiors. High-end materials and delightful detailing used on the graceful dash area are both unique and pleasing on the eye. Cosseting leather seats are electronically adjustable for those in the front. Cruise control, satellite navigation, Bluetooth communications, electric windows and mirrors, an anti-glare rear vision mirror, double sheeted window glass, an eight-speaker hi-fi audio system and automatic air-conditioning are just the beginning of the comprehensive feature list that you’ll find the Citroen C5 Tourer boasts.
I did make mention of how safe the roomy C5 Tourer is, but a little extra detail in this area won’t go amiss. Up to nine airbags are onboard, and these include knee and side airbags to complement the front ones. The back passengers get side airbags as well. Heralding a five-star result, gained in the EuroNCAP crash tests, the Citroen C5 Tourer is at the top of its game. Two large impact absorbers at the front dissipate the energy in an impact and protect the main body of the car. Body stiffness is superb, and even the steering column retracts a long way forward, away from the driver, in an impact. Anti-skid systems work fast and competently to ensure that contact with the road is maintained at maximum levels. ABS, EBD, EBA and ESP are dynamic active safety features that work very well, and they are proven life savers in emergency situations. Four massive disc brakes haul the Citroen C5 Tourer in from high speeds effortlessly, and traction control is standard.
Speaking of effortless, the 2.0 HD motor for the Citroen C5 Tourer packs heaps of smooth, silky power – just the way I like it. A healthy 340 Nm of torque pulls firmly from way down low in the engine revs. It isn’t a Ferrari, but there is always plenty in reserve for a fast passing manoeuvre or just for fun! Turbo-diesel technology provides top economy figures. You can expect an average fuel consumption of 6.8 litres/100 km.
For those of you who need more grunt, the 2.7 HDi motor is an entertaining drive. A sub ten-second romp to 100 km/h from a standstill and masses of torque (440 Nm) to play with provide the enthusiast with plenty of refined power. Fuel economy averages out to 7.4 litres/100 km.
A Hydroactive 3+ suspension provides the Citroen C5 Tourer with one of the nicest rides you’ll find anywhere. And what you’ll find beaut about how the Tourer travels is just how quiet the cabin is, the level ride, and excellent grip for those fast, sweeping curves we all seem to love.
As a fine touring wagon, you can’t beat the new Citroen C5 touring wagon. It’s my pick over the saloon version, for sure.
