Outback 2.0D CVT

A new Subaru Outback 2.0D CVT takes all surfaces in its stride, and a little light off-roading to boot. The new Diesel and CVT marriage works smoothly and performance is good.

Subaru’s new Outback looks good and modern, and now with the added bonus of the powerful 2.0-litre Diesel engine, there is a huge amount of pleasure in owning the latest high ground clearance 2.0D CVT Outback.

Subaru’s new 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines provide copious levels of torque and combines excellent everyday drivability with fuel efficiency that you just can’t equal in a petrol equivalent model. Turbo packed and boasting a displacement of 1998 cc, the Subaru Outback 2.0D CVT offers relaxed travel and highly competent light off-roading power. Offering 110 kW at 3600 rpm and a grunty 350 Nm of torque from between 1800 and 2400 rpm, the Outback 2.0D CVT impresses with the way it covers the ground – whether it be on tarmac or gravel roads. Completely at home on any surface, high speed cruising is stable and refined.

You will definitely enjoy the long intervals between fills at the gas station, because the 2.0D engine and its CVT transmission communicate very well to match your driving demands to an overall fuel consumption figure of around the 6.5 litres/100 km mark. If you enjoy a drive to work that includes mostly open road speeds, then the fuel efficiency drops to below 6 litres/100 km. Power delivery from the Lineartronic CVT unit is smooth throughout the engine revs, and this aids the Subaru Outback’s ability off-road, too. You’ll always find diehard manual fans, so it’s nice to tell these folk that the Outback 2.0D models do come with a six-speed manual alternative, but only if the CVT just can’t do it for you.

I’m sure that you’re aware of Subaru’s prowess in AWD technology. Beneath the silky exterior lines, the Subaru Outback 2.0D CVT has some fine AWD traction weaponry that’s primary DNA source comes from Subaru’s WRC successes. A central differential uses a Viscous Limited Slip Differential to provide rapid, balanced traction to all four wheels over all road surfaces that includes off-roading situations.

Comfortable seats and great ergonomics are some of the things to look out for in the Outback 2.0D CVT.

Subaru have always equipped their Outback models with a marked rise in ground clearance over standard road-going versions, so whilst these are not heavy-duty 4WD vehicles, they are extremely competent travelling over challenging forestry tracks, scampering across muddy paddocks, fording streams and heading up the ski slopes. Across the Tasman, New Zealanders love the Subaru Outback models, and are particularly loved by farmers and adventure seekers. It’s not uncommon to be travelling swiftly along the long straight roads to the Mt Hutt ski field, Canterbury and be rapidly passed by an Outback with a loaded luggage compartment, excited ski bunnies and a laden roof rack with ski equipment.

Surefooted handling combines with a potent set of 4-channel, 4-sensor ABS brakes with the added advantage of Electronic Brakeforce Distribution. In an emergency situation, the Subaru Outback bites hard to slow your speed rapidly to help keep you well out of trouble. With trailer brakes you can tow a sizable 1700 kg. Without brakes, the trailer travelling behind can weigh up to 750 kg. This adds to the practicality of owning an Outback wagon.

Rest assured that your new Subaru Outback 2.0D CVT comes with a comprehensive 5-star ANCAP safety sticker. Tested and coming up trumps in a stringent crash test like this means that you’re driving one of the safer wagons on the road, and this is an important consideration in a world where cars are getting quicker and quicker. I’m not sure if our attention to the road ahead is always what it should be, particularly in the age of the smartphone. Inside the Outback 2.0D CVT, Bluetooth wireless technology, hands-free mobile communication, live audio streaming and voice command recognition help to make for a safer environment.

Each new Subaru Outback 2.0D CVT model comes with stacks of luxury equipment to make the trip comfortable and entertaining. You’ll enjoy the drive!
