VW Transporter Review and Model Update

Big, roomy vans don’t come much more practical than the new Volkswagen Transporter.

Superior power, handling and load carrying capacity make the Volkswagen Transporter the ideal van for the business.

Take a look at the modern Transporter van, and you’ll be impressed with array of features and superb optional extras. The latest Volkswagen Transporter comes in a variety of Standard, Mid and High Roof options that are tailored to suit your business needs to a T.

If you require AWD traction, the 4MOTION all-wheel-drive option creates a working van that delivers incredibly good off-road performance and on-road grip for the wet. For sheer performance, practicality and premium build quality, the Transporter from VW is hard to beat.

Volkswagen has a superb cargo mover in their commercial vehicle line-up. The all new Volkswagen Transporter has won significant international awards for excellence.

The first Volkswagen Transporter van was introduced more than half a century ago, making the latest model the fifth generation. The Transporter’s incredible longevity just goes to show how successfully Volkswagen has produced a van that has been thoroughly thought through. The level of detail, engineering expertise, commitment to planning and careful assessment of end user requirements has all aided the production of a very fine modern day van. The Transporter T is a multi-use, multi-functional van that will haul just about anything, and it comes in a variety of configurations to suit many different commercial needs and business requirements.

The Transporter’s unique hauling abilities are also enhanced and magnified by its 4Motion® innovative all wheel drive system. The 4MOTION system drives all the road wheels through a multi plate coupling which directs power to any wheel that may slip on a loose or slippery surface. It may also direct 100% of the power to the rear wheels if need be. Now, when conditions keep normal vans and vehicles from getting there, you’ll know that with the Volkswagen Transporter the job will get done.

The pleasantly designed Transporter has a number of features that make the van something very special. The VW Transporter range can deal with plenty of on-board luggage upon review. A copious volume of between 5.8m – 9.3m cubed can be fitted inside the rear of the van – depending on which model of Transporter has been chosen. Weight is not an issue either, particularly as the strong chassis design can cope with payloads from 802 kg to 1220 kg. You’ll enjoy the choice of short or long wheelbase, low, medium or high roof lines, solid twin rear doors as standard or an optional tailgate and dual passenger seats that boast folding backrests to provide additional load carrying length.

The power to pull such weight has to come from powerful engines that have bullet proof reliability. It’s business as usual for any of Volkswagen engines. There are four TDI PD diesel engines that range in power outputs of between 61kW to 129kW. Petrol versions are offered as well. The smaller of the two produces a strong 85 kW and the larger pumps out a swift 174 kW. Robust five-speed and six-speed manuals, and smooth six speed automatic gearboxes are available to help get the job done.

The interior of the Volkswagen Transporter is designed for business, and what you won’t lack is fantastic ergonomics and comfortable seating. This is an area where the Transporter shines. Some interior features include air conditioning, comfortable bucket heated seats with fold down armrests and lumbar support options, a choice of a bench seat in the front, full height bulkhead or half height bulkhead, electric windows, mirrors and locks, cruise control, a satellite navigation system, a sliding and tilting sunroof and interior load side linings. The front doors have two handy, and useful, storage pockets – one of which will hold a 1.5 litre drink bottle. In fact, there is no shortage of storage areas on the dash either, which includes a slide out ashtray with power outlet and 2 cup/bottle holders. The steering column is adjustable for rake and reach. This van is very quiet on the move, and is very nice to drive, in fact it is more car-like than the design would indicate.

Reviewing safety, the features of the Volkswagen Transporter include: parking sensors, anti-lock brakes, a driver’s airbag, an anti-theft system, engine brake control, electronic brake force distribution, rear fog lights, headlight range control, a height and rake adjustable steering wheel and a traction control system.

If you need to transport anything nearly anywhere, and you need a vehicle that must do the job well, the VW Transporter has to be on the cards. The Transporter’s robust design and build quality, teamed with a supremely solid chassis makes the Transporter tough to beat when it comes to reliability over the hard yards. What’s more, all Transporters in ML:CurrentYear come with Volkswagen’s comprehensive 3-year/100,000km warranty and roadside assistance for a full 3 years.
