Volvo S40 2.0D

The Volvo S40 2.0D is bound to be a popular Australian family car.

When it comes to the perfect blend of fuel economy and efficiency, you can’t go past a modern diesel. And that is why Volvo created the Volvo S40 2.0D; a very safe and practical family-sized sedan with a smooth zesty engine.

This diesel unit inside the Volvo S40 2.0D is a four-cylinder common-rail direct injection 2.0 litre turbodiesel engine (which you probably guessed from the name) which is a very well-mannered unit that not only is clean-burning and very fuel-efficient, but also has a lot of oomph. While the power stats seem a little low (100 kW), the Volvo S40 2.0D more than makes up for this with a very juicy 320 Nm that leaves a lot of other cars for dead when it comes to acceleration or towing big loads. And all this can be yours via the six-speed Powershift automatic transmission – what fun!

Apart from being unique in having the turbodiesel unit, the Volvo S40 2.0D has a lot in common with others in the S40 sedan line-up. And nowhere is this truer than in the safety features. Volvo has a reputation to maintain, so it never skimps on safety. Every S-40 shares the full range of safety features, which includes the IDIS system that minimises driver distractions in ticklish situations; a super-tough body shell with side impact protection and cushioned by impact-absorbing crumple zones; front, side and curtain airbags all round; pretensioned seatbelts on the four outer seats; whiplash-protecting head rests on all five seats (the rear middle headrest folds down if it isn’t needed so the driver can see behind him/her); anti-submarining seat design, a collapsible steering column; the DSTC (dynamic stability and traction control) anti-skid system and the ABS brakes with brake assist.

Driving the Volvo S40 2.0D is an experienced not to be missed. Not only do you get the torque of the diesel unit to play with, but you will also find that the McPherson spring strut front suspension and the multi-link rear suspension are supremely comfortable and well-balanced for superior handling, allowing the Volvo S40 2.0D to respond to the signals sent via the leather-wrapped steering wheel and the power steering. Or maybe you’d like to relax and let the cruise control do its thing. And as many people choose a diesel because they need to tow heavy loads (the caravan, the boat, the horse trailer…), the Volvo S40 2.0D has been fitted with automatically levelling rear suspension that maintains the road-holding ability of the vehicle, as well as keeping the headlights and ground clearance level.

But the comfort inside the Volvo S40 2.0D doesn’t stop there. All five cloth-trimmed seats inside the S40 have been designed for superior comfort and have plenty of padding just where you need it, including stepless lumbar support for the driver. And the rear seats come with integrated booster seats for the smaller members of the family. The interior ambience is taken care of with an electronic dual-zone climate control system and a pollen filter (this is not the only filter inside the 2.0D – the diesel engine also has a particulate filter).

If you need to keep the troops entertained, the Volvo S40 2.0D is fitted out with a power socket for a rear-seat entertainment. But most people would be more than happy with the Performance audio system that features a 4x20W amplifier, four speakers, a CD player and an auxiliary jack. However, if a situation gets tricky, the IDIS system will silence the stereo and reduce distractions until things calm down.

The Volvo S40 2.0D comes in a range of sharp-looking colours, and sits proudly on 16-inch wheels.
