2022 Toyota LandCruiser 300

You like it big?  You like it chunky?  Then the 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 design ticks all the right boxes for your new 4×4 luxury buy.  From all angles this is a nicely proportioned large 4×4 SUV that dwarfs almost any vehicle on the road other than a bus or truck.  Very solidly built, safe and comfortable, you can take one of these into the bush knowing you’ll get through to the other side.

Most of the new Toyota Land Cruiser 300s will likely spend most of their time on the nice black roads of the urban jungle, hopping the curb at footie practice or jumping the pavement to park on the lawn.  However, some new 300s will be put to work towing the tandem horse float, lugging the yacht out to launch or even towing the 3.5 tonne braked trailer full of shingle.  Such is the versatility of the latest Land Cruiser 300.

I’ve been told there is a waiting list, so you’ll need to get in quick, otherwise you might be waiting a year or two for yours.  The new 300 is chunky and glamorous in a conservative kind of way, which is the perfect Toyota approach, the design team having nailed the brief of producing a large, luxury 4×4 that looks good, is superbly spacious, and wonderfully comfortable, while heading toward full electrification.  A brand new hybrid model is part of the large Land Cruiser 300 range, hinting toward the future of 4×4 travel.

People who have either owned a Land Cruiser in the past or who have had the pleasure of riding in one know how well-built and comfortable these machines are.  This latest 300 model has seamlessly drawn the line further down the path of the evolving world of ICE to Hybrid to EV for Toyota.  And what powers the new 300 Land Cruiser?

Under the hood, a brand new 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel engine packs a winning 227 kW punch and a twist of 700 Nm rivalling Aljona Savchenko and Bruno Massot!  These figures confirm the 300 model as the most powerful diesel-powered LandCruiser ever.  This new diesel V6 is the engine that will power all the latest models in Australia for now.  However, Toyota has been quite clear in stating that a hybrid will join the line-up at some point.

Getting that power to all four wheels is taken care of by a smooth and sophisticated 10-speed automatic transmission, which is also new and designed specifically to enhance the new Land Cruiser’s driving performance and fuel efficiency, all the while making it quieter to travel in.

The GX is your standard rugged 4×4 that kicks the range off.  In the Sahara ZX, a rear torque sensing Limited Slip Differential (LSD) means power is always going to remain a little smoother and constant throughout a variety of on and off-road surfaces and situations.  On the GXL model and above, a Multi Terrain Select system combines with a new Automatic Mode that has been tuned specifically for Australian conditions.  Special algorithms have been dialled in to adjust the brake hydraulic pressure, the driving force, and the suspension systems to cater for our unique conditions down under.  The Automatic Mode also helps your new LandCruiser 300 find the best traction on a range of surfaces and terrains.

New for 2022 is the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 GR Sport model which gets the E-KDSS (Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System) that responds to real-time conditions and engages its stabilisers during spirited on road cornering.  E-KDSS also enhances the big 4×4’s traction capabilities and its movement for seriously rugged off-roading.

Available in the Land Cruiser VX models and above is a 3D Multi-Terrain Monitor.  This clever system uses its array of cameras to assist you in determining the conditions around the vehicle in any real-time off-roading expedition.  It will also use the info to aid traction in 4×4 modes.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard in any new Toyota Land Cruiser 300.  GXL models and above provide a wireless charging and connection feature for your phone.  You never feel outdone for comfort in any of the models, but the higher-end versions gain a few extra interior features as you move on up the ladder.  Things like a larger 12.3-inch colour touchscreen display is found on Land Cruiser 300 VX models and above. In the Sahara and above, you’ll also gain a premium 14-speaker JBL sound system.

Space is never an issue with a Land Cruiser and, on the 2022 Sahara ZX models, a hands free tailgate with a kick sensor makes packing the boot easy. Five and seven seater options are available, and third row occupant space is right up there with the best of them.  All new Land Cruiser 300s have a very solid and safe construction and can come with all the advanced Toyota Safety Sense technologies that include automatic braking and adaptive cruise control.
