Tesla Model Y SUV 2022

Tesla Model Y 2022

Inside a 2022 Tesla Model Y the style and cabin design is pretty much identical to a Model 3 Sedan.  The very minimalist dash features the same huge touchscreen in the centre of the dash, which is technically about as good a screen as you’ll find in any car – it’s that good.  You control pretty much every aspect of the car and your drive via the touchscreen.  Material and trim is of a decent quality and there are nice touches of wood and leather about the cabin.  Vegan leather for the seats is an option in any Tesla.

Like in the Tesla Model 3 there is ample storage space in the glovebox, between the front seats, on the door panels, and in the boot – both ends!  Being an EV, the Tesla Model Y has a nice space for luggage behind the rear seats (854 litres), but you’ll also find underfloor storage – likely a handy space for the charging cables.  Then there is a neat little space (117 litres) under the bonnet at the front of the car (some call this the frunk) to put your grocery bags and other shopping items into.  Though Tesla quotes a boot capacity of 854 litres, it’s worth noting that the Model Y SUV doesn’t have a parcel shelf or load cover included in this figure.  The rear seats can easily be folded flat for more luggage space (split folding), and there is a through-loading section in the middle of the rear seat backrest that folds down forwards and flat – maybe a great space for chunky bits of timber for those building projects, the surfboard, or even pairs of skis for the winter weekend away up in the mountains.  Isofix points make it easy to fit child seats in and across the back seat.

Alloy wheels range from 19–21 inch, the 21-inch reserved for the Performance Model Y.  While the Tesla Model 3 has a sedan shape, the Tesla Model Y is essentially a Model 3 that has been enlarged to take on the SUV shape and space.  The Model Y is as smooth as a water droplet, bringing more interior space for those who are after a Tesla with a taller roofline and more road presence.  One detail I like about the Model Y is the little ripple/crease line that runs from the headlight to the taillight, becoming more pronounced as it reaches the back end of the car, particularly around the car’s hip area.

One thing about the Tesla Model Y SUV is that you sit higher up than in the Model 3 and other sedans, and hence it gives you a greater feeling of being in control with its more commanding view of the road ahead.  The seats are very comfortable, and the finish and stitching remind me a lot of the classy Saab Carlsson in years gone by – and that’s a compliment.  Back seat space is excellent and there is a huge amount of foot space underneath the front seats.  If you happen to shuffle into the back seat and find that you’re in the middle space, then you’ll be pleasantly surprised in finding that even here you’ll have plenty of decent seating space for head, shoulders, knees, and toes!  Reclining rear seats are standard, which help to make the journey a very relaxed one – even for tall, leggy occupants.  The glass roof certainly delivers plenty of light into the Model Y cabin.

One very cool standard feature in a Tesla is the Dog Mode, where you can leave your pooch in the car’s interior while you go for a spot of shopping and the Tesla will maintain the cabin temperature at exactly the right temperature that is safe for your dog.  Satellite navigation, voice control, and climate control are all standard items.  In fact, the Tesla Model Y SUV EVs come fully loaded with very few options, so you’ll know right from the word go that you’re pretty sweet when it comes to the best in technology, entertainment, and comfort.  Options include things like the auto pilot upgrades (they can even be downloaded over the internet at a later date), the tow hitch, the paint colour, the wheel sizes, and various trims for the interior.

Tesla cars have been engineered to provide maximum safety for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.  In 2020, the Tesla Model Y SUV earned a 5-star safety rating in every category from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), making the Model Y one of the safest vehicles available.  Our own ANCAP hasn’t tested the Tesla Model Y SUV yet.

With a 0-100 km/h sprint time of around 5.5 seconds for the 220 kW RWD Model Y and 3.8 seconds for the 393 kW Performance Model Y, you don’t stick about in a Tesla!  AWD traction in the Performance model gives you a high level of control in any weather and road conditions, though the RWD variant costs less and never really feels out of place.  The suspension in a Model Y has been stiffened to cope with the extra weight of its SUV shape, but it still feels quick in its steering response.  Active cruise control and lane keeping assist is a standard Tesla feature.  Great visibility all around the car ensures that you have a good hold of everything that’s happening around about the car and on the road ahead.  A 70kWh battery pack delivers a decent amount of range in the Tesla Model Y.  You should be able to travel around 500 km before needing to top up your charge.

One of the main reasons why you’ll buy a Model Y over a Model 3 is the practicality you’ll gain if you have a family-in-tow.  The Tesla SUV is a really decent and practical EV.  There are also numerous fun software features like fart mode, various horn sounds, and even the ability to watch Netflix over the big screen if-or-when your flight gets delayed.
