2022 Tesla Model 3 Sedan

Tesla Model 3

Yes, a new Tesla Model 3 Sedan is available now in Australia.  Three models are offered new: the Rear-Wheel Drive, Long Range, and Performance models.  You can expect to pay a bit over $70k for the base RWD model, and around $101k for the priciest Performance version.  The Long Range variant has a price tag that sits in the middle.

A 2022 Tesla Model 3 looks clean and aerodynamic, just as you would expect from a sporty EV.  Performance models of the Tesla Model 3 aren’t only insanely fast, they also have a carbon fibre boot spoiler, 20-inch alloy rims, bigger brakes, and they hunker down lower to the ground compared with the other two Model 3 variants.

Tesla Model 3 Sedans have been made to show that EVs can be more fun to drive than cars with internal combustion engines (ICEs).  They really are very quick out on the road.  Tesla Model 3 Performance models boast 377 kW of power, AWD, a 0-100 km/h time of around 3.3 seconds (claimed), a top speed of 261 km/h, and a WLTP driving range of 547 km.  Obviously, your range on any EV is dependent upon the size of the battery you have onboard and the heaviness of your right foot, as well as driving style and the driving environment.  Long Range versions have 366 kW on tap, whereas the RWD variants put out a healthy 208 kW (about the same as a fairly recent Mitsubishi Evo).

Inside a new Tesla, the cabin of the Model 3 feels much better than the older Model S, so there are now better materials found throughout the cabin with softer surfaces.  The build quality is strong and not far off an equivalent BMW or Audi.  But it’s in the infotainment area that the new Tesla Model 3 outclasses its rivals.  A massive touchscreen sits proudly centre dash, and it basically runs the show.  If you build your life around electronics and infotainment, then the Tesla Model 3 will currently be the EV for you.  If you opt for the Performance model, then Vegan leather and a full-length glass roof comes as standard.

All Tesla Model 3 sedans come with zoned climate control, Spotify, digital radio, a HD reversing camera, wireless mobile phone connectivity, 5-star ANCAP safety, and an optional full length glass roof (standard on Performance Model 3).  Heated seats for front and rear passengers is also a nice touch.  A very decent google maps app is standard, so you’ll be hard pressed to get yourself lost.

Updates to the car’s systems can be done over the internet, but my favourite Tesla Model 3 feature has to be the Fart Mode, a mode where you can program any seat in the car to make a fart noise as someone sits down.  Romantic Mode has the screen showing a roaring fire, the seats warming up and the vents blowing some warm air as well.  Tesla cars do have a sense of humour or at least some of their creators do.

There are plenty of other options to be had on a new Tesla Model 3.  For instance, the base model can add 19″ Sport Wheels ($2,200), an Enhanced Autopilot package ($5,100) with a Navigation System that has Advanced Functionality with Fully Automated Parking Assistance that is even Remote Controlled.  You could get Full Self Driving Capability ($10,100), which gets you an Adaptive Speed Limiter with Road Sign Recognition, a Navigation System with Advanced Functionality, full automated Parking Assistance, and Speed Zone Reminders with Road Sign Recognition.  For an extra $1,500 you could have your black interior become a mix of Black and White on the dashboard inserts and seats.  An Exterior Black Paint job will set you back ($1,500), or a Metallic finish ($1,500), or a Multi-Coat Red exterior paint job ($2,900).

Drivers will enjoy an excellent position in their seat thanks to a fully electronically adjustable steering column and a seat that is multi adjustable up and down, and in and out.  The front seat passenger also gets a fully electronically adjusted seat.  Rear seat passengers will find things comfortable, though anyone over 6-ft might find the head room a bit tight.  Isofix points are easily located in the rear seat for securing kiddies’ seats.

Yes, you can tow with a Tesla Model 3.  Of course, the driving range will suffer, but the RWD and Long Range models can cope with a braked trailer weight of 1000 kg or an unbraked trailer of 750 kg.  Performance models can pull up to 500 kg braked or unbraked.  Plenty of compartments for storage are all about the cabin and, of course, you have cup holders.  Boot space is 425 litres, and the usable space includes a handy underfloor storage compartment as well – a great place for the charging cables.  However, don’t forget there is also a bit of space for shopping bags at the front of the car under the bonnet because, subtly, there is something missing!

Tesla Model 3 cars are very fast and fun to drive.  They accelerate hard and corner surprisingly well when you consider the weight of these liquid lithium battery packed EVs.  Buy a new Tesla Model 3, and you’ll get a 4-yr 80,000 km warranty with roadside assistance.
