2020 Renault Megane Sport

2020 Renault Megane Sport

You can’t get away from the fact that, for yonks, Renault has been making some of the most scintillating hot-hatches.  They have delivered a masterclass in hatchback heaven with the new 2020 Renault Megane Sport worthy of top honours.  It looks fast, even when parked up at the curb.  It sounds fast, popping and cracking at full tilt.  It drives like it’s on rails.  And, it delivers the thrill that driving enthusiasts crave but with a ride that remains supple for the everyday driver.

If you love the new Megane’s attractive looks, want plenty of go and plenty of comfort, then the 2020 Renault Megane Sport has to be the Megane model to go for.  There is the quicker and more serious Cup and Trophy versions, which are great for the track, however, the Sport has enough power and rides with a nice balance of comfort-and-‘go-hard’ attitude, which makes it the better package for everyday life.  I reckon the new Renault Megane Sport is a gem.

It deliver’s its eye-catching lines on 18-inch wheels, which are standard on Sport cars.  The latest Sport features a widened stance for an imposing and impressive road presence, enhanced by its F1 blade and wide rear diffuser.  A bold front grille, side extractor vents and R.S. Vision multi-functional LED headlights give the car a classic sporty look, and it can also sit on 19-inch alloys for pure hot-hatch style.  A number of gorgeous exterior colours are offered: Diamond Black, Tonic Orange, Liquid Yellow, Perl White and Glacier White shine, all with plenty of lustre, even on dull days.

The steering wheel’s a mix of leather and Alcantara, the seats are trimmed in suede.  The Renault Megane Sport boasts a nice dash with buttons that are easy to locate.  The portrait-style infotainment system touchscreen is an 8.7-inch one and looks nice.  The rest of the cabin is well fitted and has silver accents to keep it fresh.  The black interior colour scheme is classy, the plastics on the doors and dashboard soft, and the tech includes things like: Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, sat nav with live traffic alerts and a stereo delivering a quality sound.

Life in the front seats is great.  Accessing the rear seats is easy, thanks to its wide-opening five-door design.  Three seats are available in the back; however two adults would find time spent in the Sport more accommodating.  The Renault Megane is a safe car, and has been awarded the full five-stars from EuroNCAP crash testing experts.  Airbags, an advanced stability control system, hill-hold assist, traffic sign recognition, automatic high-low beam, blind spot warning, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, active emergency braking, easy park assist and surround parking sensors are all on-board.  Boot space has dropped a bit from the previous model, but it still offers a capacity of 384 litres.  With the rear seats down, the Renault Megane Sport has a total volume of 1247 litres available.

Now for the ‘hot-hatch’ bit: the 2020 Renault Megane Sport offers the choice of a manual or ‘EDC’ (Efficient Dual-Clutch) auto, both are six-speed.  Under the hood the latest Sport downsizes its ccs to 1800, where the engine is a lighter aluminium 1.8-litre Turbo.  The 16-valve, four-cylinder turbocharged motor is the same engine that is found in the Alpine A110.  Currently, this engine is the most powerful 1.8 petrol on the market, and it puts out 205 kW at 6000 rpm and 390 Nm between 2400-4800 rpm.  The 0-100 km/h dash is completed in less than six seconds, which is fast by any standards.

Renault has provided the new Sport with a decent four-wheel-steering system to match the FWD power.  It uses passive dampers rather than electronically controlled adaptive shocks, and its rear suspension is a torsion beam.  The ride is wonderfully supple, yet the car carves through the corners very flat with copious amounts of control.  Boasting seriously widened tracks has the front wheel arches a full 60 mm wider than the standard Megane, and the rear is 45 mm wider.  This width equates to awesome high-speed stability.  The Renault Megane Sport comes with four different driving modes to suit your mood – Race, Sport, Comfort and Normal.

Boasting a 5 year/unlimited km warranty, 3 capped price Renault services and up to 4 Years 24/7 roadside assistance, now is the time to let your hair down and experience the new Megane Sport.  The Hot Hatch for the discerning driver.
