Porsche 718 Boxster

Exciting news for all you Porsche fans out there.  Not only does the latest Porsche Boxster provide the latest four-cylinder supercar performance, it does it so easily.  The new 718 styled Boxster is a quality new car from Porsche that demands attention.  Always ready for the track, the car is the ultimate roadster.

Yes, the 718 Boxster takes its cues from the 718 RSK racer that won many track days back in the 1960s as well as the famous Porsche 550 Spyder.  Both of these cars came with flat-four engines that powered them to racing success, so don’t be surprised to see modern Porsche cars dropping down in engine size from the six-cylinders (we’re used to) to the new four-cylinder turbo engine we now see in the exciting Porsche 718 Boxster.  Porsche has proven that thrilling performance doesn’t have to come from big engines.

New for the 718 Boxster is the base engine which is now a 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four that makes 220 kW and 380 Nm.  The 718 Boxster S gets the 2.5-liter version with a more advanced variable geometry turbo.  This results in more torque and power resulting in 261 kW and 420 Nm.  Incredibly, Porsche designers have enabled the standard 718 Boxster to hit 100 km/h in a meagre 4.9 seconds, this is with the optional PDK dual-clutch gearbox and Sport Chrono linking the engine power to the wheels.  Hop in the 718 Boxster S, and the car will do the same sprint in 4.2 seconds and run on to a top speed of 285 km/h.  Both engines have their peak torque available from way down low then running cleanly past the mid-range and toward the car’s peak power revolutions without a hitch.  It’s nice to know that with all this velocity comes a Porsche braking system more than capable of stopping the vehicle quickly and with confidence.  The optional 350 mm carbon-ceramic brakes are phenomenal, though the standard330 mm steel brakes are more than sufficient for road use.

Visually, the latest 718 Boxster has a lot of similarity in appearance to the outgoing models, however the new car only shares the windshield, rear lid, and power operated cloth roof with the outgoing model.  Every other body panel is new, and I like the larger and bolder side scoops which fire the fresh air into either the engine intake or the air-to-water intercooler mounted on top of the engine.  No wonder this engine breathes easily and packs colossal performance.

Fire the engine and there is the familiar Porsche engine note, and then a nice Bass note throbbing in the musical tones.  There is a nice turbo whoosh and the rhythmic bass line of a boxer four – lovely indeed!  Porsche’s new “pre-spool” turbo technology and Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) has the car feeling faster everywhere in the rev range.  You have instant acceleration from stand-still or on a high speed passing manoeuvre.  Refinements like Drive-Mode selection enable you to enjoy a nice cruise as a premium GT car and then, with the press of the Sport Response button, the system has the car dropping down a gear and going into maximum performance mode combined with the PDK option mode (PDK versions).  Standard Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S cars come with the quick and slick, six-speed manual transmission and automatic rev-matching.  If you can run to the slightly more expensive PDK models, the driving experience is at its best for the powertrain set-up.

Seated inside the low profile Boxster cabin, the leather sport seats are snug and figure-holding.  Looking across the dash, the layout is typically clear and well laid out.  Luxury items like climate air-conditioning, satellite navigation, adaptive cruise control, premium audio and hands-free communication are items that are standard on all models.  A central mounted Porsche touch screen is boss of the car’s entertainment and comfort features.

Seated in front of the 918 inspired steering wheel, the driver has a perfect seating position, and when equipped with PDK, the shifters are positioned for easy flicking with the fingers.  A selector is also present for choosing one of four drive modes: Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, or Individual.  You can also select suspension, exhaust volume, traction control, and other settings via buttons surrounding the transmission lever.  The optional PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) gives you a lowered ride height with adjustable dampers.

With the Porsche Tequipment range of accessories developed specifically for the 718 models, you can style your 718 entirely to your own preference.  For the ultimate Boxer experience, the flat four-cylinder 718 Boxster has it all.  Excitement, passion and seduction are all words you could use to describe the 2016 Porsche Boxster.  It’s impressive!
