Peugeot 308 GTi

In the hot hatch arena there are a few competitors worth checking out.  One of the leading drives has to be the new Peugeot 308 GTi.  The light weight body and punchy engine equals a load of fun.  But the 308 GTi is not just a hoot to drive, the hatch also remains refined and sophisticated when the speeds drop and you are meandering around bumpy city streets.  The quality ride is excellent.

If you like the 308 GTi design, then you’re definitely not the only one.  The styling is compact and balanced, with nice wide wheels and sweet exterior detailing.  The large front air dam, tagged headlights and chunky twin exhaust outlets look racy.  Switch the lights on and the tail lights are striped and spicy.  With its unique stance, the GTi sits 11 mm lower to the ground, boasts 19’-inch aluminium Carbone wheels and provides imposing looks.  The modern 308 GTi is a sexy hatch, thanks to the fabulous design team at Peugeot.  Some other design features that quickly draw the eye are the large front brake discs with red callipers branded with ‘Peugeot Sport’, the large radiator grille, GTi logos on the front wings and tailgate and the aerodynamic deflectors at the bottom of the front bumper.  One of the cool 308 GTi exterior features is the Coupe Franche separation-line design which contrasts the new, explosive Ultimate Red with Perla Nera Black.  Of course, if that design print is not for you, then exterior colours include: Ultimate Red, Magnetic Blue, Perla Nera Black, Artense Grey, Pearlescent White and Hurricane Grey.

On the road, the FWD Peugeot 308 GTi is amazingly agile and loves to be driven fast.  The Torsen limited-slip differential combines with an updated traction control system for superior grip.  Electronic Stability Control can be fully disconnected, if you prefer.  The flipside of the coin is just as good, because as you lower the speeds to the typical flow of daily traffic the new 308 GTi rides very comfortably, making life relaxed.  This is a great riding hot hatch, and it shows how Peugeot engineers have worked to get it right for all road conditions.

Relax in the leather covered bucket seat and cruise the roads with complete satisfaction.  Everything is at the fingertips, and with voice control, there are a number of features that can be controlled without taking hands or eyes of the important stuff.  The Peugeot Sport bucket seats are upholstered in leather and alcantara and are really comfortable.  A large touchscreen forms a one-piece part of the instrument panel with its racy redline theme.  You might like to opt for the Driver Sport Pack which allows the driver to press the sport button on the centre console that switches the display colour from white to red and shows extra information on the central readout which includes power, torque, boost, lateral and longitudinal acceleration.  The engine growl is enhanced and the accelerator pedal map is changed for more sport.

On the practical side, the 2016 308 GTi can seat five while providing 470 litres in the boot.  Flatten the rear seats, and the luggage volume grows to 1309 litres.  A reversing camera, climate and cruise control as well as navigation are all standard features.  Then there is the awesome audio system that can provide some nice funky beats to enhance the drive even more.

What makes the Peugeot 308 GTi so exciting is the car’s light weight and the 200 kW engine with a maximum torque of 330 Nm.  Maximum torque ranges from 1900 to 5000 rpm.  Power and torque are accessible at an instant, and the special wastegate valve engine design enables huge levels of response.  The 0-100 km/h dash can be completed in just 6.0 seconds, while on the right piece of road the car can run on to 250 km/h.  Engine response is connected to the road via a slick six-speed manual transmission and wide rubber.

Create your own driving identity with the new hot hatch from Peugeot.  There are other possibilities out there like the VW Golf R, Audi S3, Honda Civic Type R, and the Renault Megane R.S. 275.  The new 308 GTi is an impressive package that really cracks the whip and feels great to drive.
