2020 MG HS SUV

2020 MG HS SUV

MG has a winner here, and it’s known as the MG HS, a small/mid-size SUV that has loads going for it. The styling looks good, the interior is nice, it’s well-equipped, the price is right and there is a punchy, economical motor to whisk you along.  These are just some of the great things about the new MG HS SUV worth mentioning. There are plenty more great MG HS talking points, but let’s take a closer look at what is a nice looking small SUV with plenty of room..

Let’s start with the SUV styling.  From all angles the new MG HS is attractive, and with a sporty flair evident in its exterior lines, the new HS should appeal to buyers from all ages.  You could call it a mid-size SUV, in fact, which is fair – thanks to the very decent levels of head and leg room that all occupants enjoy.  Inside the new MG HS is comfortable and roomy seating for all the family.  The split-folding rear seats can be laid flat to accommodate plenty of luggage capacity (463 litres rear seats up/1287 litres rear seats flat).

Nice materials are found throughout the cabin, and the seats have a soft touch for comfort, as well as providing very good support for longer journeys.  Both the Vibe and the Excite models have body coloured bumpers, body coloured exterior door handles and body coloured exterior mirrors.  Chrome highlighting on the exterior looks elegant, and both models also come with a nice feeling leather steering wheel that sits solidly in your palms.  The leather seats in the Excite model are really nice!

Another Premium 2020 MG HS Option

As far as equipment goes, even the base model Vibe is loaded with countless features.  You can buy one of these for around $30k, so the snazzy 17-inch alloy wheels set the Vibe off nicely along with the attractive nose treatment that all MG HS SUVs get.

Full of quality features, for what is an ideal small family SUV, the 2020 MG HS Vibe comes with 12 volt power outlets, adaptive cruise control, an adjustable steering wheel – tilt & telescopic, air conditioning, an alarm system/remote anti theft, a shark fin antenna on the roof, an automatic hold function, blind spot monitoring, bluetooth connectivity, a cargo cover, isofix anchorage points for child seats, cup holders (front and rear), curtain airbags, digital audio broadcast radio, driver lumbar support as well as 6-way adjustment, an electric parking brake, electric power steering, an engine immobiliser, plenty of USB sockets, fog lights (front and rear), halogen headlights, headlights with an auto on/off function, manual levelling headlights, follow me home headlights, headrests for rear seat occupants, hill start assist, an illuminated glove box compartment, an individual cool box, an instrument panel light dimmer, intelligent lighting system, intelligent speed assist, keyless entry, lane change assist, a leather steering wheel, luggage/cargo area lighting, a maintenance interval indicator, map reading lights, metallic paint, a multi-function control screen, a multi-function display, a multi-function steering wheel, a passenger seat with 4-way manual adjustment, power exterior mirrors that are heated and boast indicators, anti-trapping power windows, power windows with a one-touch operation, projector headlights, rear air-conditioning, a rear centre armrest, rear cross traffic alert, a rear spoiler on the tailgate, a rear-view mirror with automatic dimming, reclining rear seats, a remote boot/hatch release, seatback pockets on the front seats, seatbelts that have anti-submarining, the seatbelts are height adjustable on the front seats, seatbelts with load limiters and pretensioners, side steps, smart key entry, a smartphone pack, a decent audio package with 6 speakers, split fold rear seats, a subwoofer, sunglasses holder, sunvisors with vanity mirrors and illumination, traction control, traffic jam assist, a trip computer, a vehicle dynamics control system, a nice vinyl upholstery, virtual instrumentation and a whiplash protection system.  It’s all rather comprehensive, really!

The standard 10.1-inch touchscreen is big and has all the goodies you’ll want.  Technology and connectivity are at the heart of the brand new MG HS, with a large infotainment screen situated front-and-centre of the dashboard.  The system is compatible with both Apple CarPla and Android Auto for ultimate comfort, connectivity and seamless integration with your phone, apps and music.  The blend of techno ease with audio sound is superb and a great MG asset.

Step into the MG HS Excite SUV and there are a few more things that will catch your eye: 18-inch alloy wheels, ambient interior lighting, automatic climate control with dual temperature zones, driver mode selection, a global positioning system, a satellite navigation system, paddle shifters on steering wheel, a power tailgate, a sport management strategy system, sports mode, sports pedals and welcoming lights.  For only a few ‘K’ extra, these features are worth it.

Both the MG HS Vibe and the MG HS Excite come with a seven-speed automatic that has a rather indecent smoothness for a car of this price bracket.  Nicely connected with the engine power outputs, the gearbox works very efficiently and smoothly to put down the power delivery via the front wheels very well.

Boasting the same 1.5-litre turbo petrol unit, both the Vibe and Excite have lively punch that keeps the new MG HS in hot pursuit of rightfully contending as the best current small SUV in this segment.  The HS’s turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol might seem rather light on power, but it brings 124 kW and 250 Nm to the party via the slick 7-speed dual-clutch automatic; and the marriage is a good one.  Hey, you also get a seven-year/unlimited km warranty quelling any unease of buying new.  The MG HS brings peace-of-mind motoring to its new owner.  This is the sort of car ownership I like.  MG definitely backs their product, and the HS certainly feels a solid, satisfying buy.

What about safety? The MG HS has this area covered in spades.  Features like the: anti-lock braking system, autonomous emergency braking, cornering brake control, cruise control intelligent/active, daytime running lights (LED), an electronic stability program, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, parking distance control rear, LED rear lights, a reversing camera, seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters, a seatbelt reminder for all seats, front and side curtain airbags, and a tyre pressure monitoring system go a long way to making this a very safe small/mid-size SUV.  A five-star safety result in the recent Euro NCAP crash test speaks volumes of how well put together this new Chinese made SUV is.

What does the 2020 MG HS go up against? Well its main rivals would have to be the mid-size Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5, both very good stalwarts of the SUV world.  Against these two, the new MG HS offers a slightly more exotic flavour, an upmarket interior with sweet detailing, awesome equipment levels, and a great engine with decent power delivery and efficiency.

And, for the ‘heads-up’, an AWD 2.0-litre turbo and plug-in hybrid are likely to join the MG HS line-up in the near future.
