2020 Mazda CX-30 SUV

2020 Mazda CX-30

Want a highly recommended set of wheels?  Mazda’s new CX-30 ticks all the right boxes and proves to be a really nice compact SUV to drive.  Great looks, decent levels of driving satisfaction, high safety and excellent comfort are all characteristics of the new Mazda CX-30 you’re going to love.

Eye-catching CX-30 styling is met with approval, and the new Mazda SUV is the continuation of Mazda’s superb design team’s efforts.  They’ve managed to make the CX-30 one of the nicest looking compact SUVs on the road with its dynamic appearance and sporty lines.  It isn’t a huge SUV (4.3 metres long), so it will be ideal for empty nesters, individuals and small families alike.  Of course, there are larger CX models available on Mazda’s showroom floors for those who need a bit more space – particularly in rear seat leg room and boot space.  The new Mazda CX-30 offers 430 litres of boot space with the rear seats in place – a bit smaller if you get the Astina model with the Bose audio system.  The Mazda CX-9 is the range topper for size.

2020 Mazda CX-30

Out on the road the Mazda CX-30 really shines with wonderful control and ride comfort.  The exterior noise is well suppressed to make the cabin environment quiet and relaxed.  FWD and AWD variants are available, and the premium G25 Astina and Touring models are a class act.  These models get the larger engine, and deliver a good responsive drive to match the rewarding handling package.  Perhaps it could be said that the new Mazda’s CX-30’s only issue might be that the line-up doesn’t offer a ‘fair-dinkum’ performance model for those who like to do life a little quicker.

I’m also pleased to report that the new Mazda CX-30 doesn’t come with a lifeless CVT, but comes standard with a great six-speed automatic transmission.  Numerous CX-30 rivals are equipped with a CVT that can sometimes feel like its sucking power out of the driving experience.  On the new Mazda CX-30 front-wheel-drive is standard, but Mazda’s i-ACTIV all-wheel-drive system is available for a small cost on all trims.

On to a more serious note: safety-wise the 2020 Mazda CX-30 has blitzed the Euro NCAP safety testing with a 5-star blinder and a near-flawless 99 per cent adult occupant score.  That result is higher than the BMW 3 Series (97 per cent), Tesla Model 3 (96), Mercedes-Benz EQC (also 96) and the Toyota RAV4 (93 per cent).  Mazda is no slouch when it comes to safety, and the CX-30’s result continues Mazda’s string of high safety credentials.  Mazda’s latest 3 was recently awarded a 98 per cent score in the same test.  An autonomous braking system detecting cars, pedestrians and cyclists; a traffic sign recognition system, speed-limit information, lane-keep assist and seatbelt reminders all help make up the premium safety package.  You can drive a new Mazda CX-30 and enjoy its solid feel with the peace of mind that you’re well covered if things turned pear shape.

So, things kick off with the Mazda CX-30 G20 Pure which gets the 2.0 litre, in-line 4-cylinder, 16-valve DOHC S-VT petrol engine with i-stop technology.  Power is rated at 114 kW at 6,000 rpm, while peak torque is 200 Nm at 4,000 rpm.  You get air-conditioning, an auxiliary 12 volt power outlet, power windows, a rear-view mirror with its auto dimming function, 2 USB charging points in the front, vanity mirrors for the driver and front passenger, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, multi-function commander control, satellite navigation, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, front side and curtain airbags, blind spot monitoring, driver alert, dynamic stability control, intelligent speed assist, rear parking sensors, secondary collision reduction, traction control, an 8.8-Inch widescreen display, Mazda Radar cruise control and loads more.  Even the base model Pure gets a healthy equipment list, with things like adaptive cruise control and LED headlights on the list as standard.

Next comes the Mazda CX-30 G20 Evolve.  Here some notable additions include paddle shift gear control, dual-zone climate control with rear vents and bigger 18-Inch alloy wheels.

Moving on to the Mazda CX-30 G20 Touring model, and here you can add to the Evolve’s spec with items like advanced keyless entry, leather seats with electronic driver seat adjustment and front parking sensors being part of the Touring suite.

The charming Mazda CX-30 G20 Astina packs the premium Bose sound system on-board.  This is a beautiful sound for all the music lovers – you’ll love it!  Astina also offers adaptive LED headlights (ALH) and Vision Technology as standard.

Next in line we find the Mazda CX-30 G25 Touring which also gets a bigger engine.  The 2.5-litre, in-line 4-cylinder, 16-valve DOHC S-VT petrol engine with i-stop and cylinder deactivation delivers great response and a punchier drive.  Boasting 139 kW of power at 6,000 rpm, and a heftier 252 Nm of torque peaking at 4,000 rpm, the 2.5-litre is both smooth and effortless.  If having a bit more get-up-and-go matters to you, then the G25 models are the ones to go for.  The Touring model gets nice features like advanced keyless entry, leather seats with driver seat power adjustment and front parking sensors.

At the top of the Mazda CX-30 range sits the G25 Astina.  Everything premium finds its way on-board and you even get the option of pure white leather upholstery, Vision Technology as standard, and a power sliding and tilt glass sun-roof.  All the vibes are nice!

The brand new Mazda CX-30 marks itself out as being one of the sweeter-to-drive cars in its class.  Take the hint and check one out for yourself, particularly if you are needing new compact SUV ride.
