2019 Mazda MX-5

2019 Mazda MX-5

Riding in the 2019 Mazda MX-5 is the closest thing to riding in a racing go-kart.  Road holding is amazing, while the 2.0-litre engine for the new MX-5 now has more power to deliver a thrilling drive; and what a great look too.  There is certainly fun to be had in a new Mazda MX-5 which comes in Retractable Fastback (RF) and Soft Top variants.

Undercutting sports cars such as the forthcoming BMW Z4, the Audi TT Roadster and Mercedes SLC on price by a large margin means that the new Mazda MX-5 is the value roadster in this company – something which it has always had as part of its marketing weaponry.  It’s available with a cloth roof that folds down manually, or with a metal roof that does so electrically – which is called the Mazda MX-5 RF.  Of the two versions, the one that will appeal to you will come completely down to taste.  For me I love the convertible experience that either of the two new MX-5 cars offer.  If I was to choose between the two, however, I would probably opt for the RF; mainly because I like the thought of having the extra thickness and snugness that the solid roof provides the occupants.

Despite the 2019 Mazda MX-5 being very reasonably priced, the little roadster comes well equipped – with even the base models getting LED headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, electric windows, remote central locking, heated wing mirrors, traction control, stability control and a multitude of airbags.

The Mazda MX-5 offers space for two people.  Taller adults are well catered for, and they should be more than happy with the level of room for their legs and heads.  Where it could feel a little snug is in the amount of shoulder room.  Seated down low, you get a great sense of being close to the road as you rip across the tarmac.  The sports seats are first-rate and provide excellent bolstering for fast cornering which is pure joy in a car of this calibre.  Superb feedback via the drive-by-wire steering wheel gives added confidence when chucking the latest MX-5 through the corners; and this is something that it has been perfectly designed to do.

Mazda equips the 2019 MX-5 with two engine alternatives.  Entry-level cars are fitted with a 1.5 litre in-line 4 cylinder 16-valve DOHC S-VT petrol engine boasting 97 kW at 7000 rpm and 152 Nm of torque at 4500 rpm.  Wonderfully frugal, this little sports car can return well under 6 litres/100 km on the open road.  A bigger 2.0-litre engine powers the top-of-the-range models, and in this form the 2.0 litre in-line 4 cylinder 16-valve DOHC S-VT petrol engine packs 135 kW at 7000 rpm along with 205 Nm of torque in the mid-range.  The key to extracting the most performance out of either engine comes down to using the higher engine revs to really get a move on.

The 1.5-litre power output may sound pretty modest for a modern sports car, but in a car which weighs around 1000 kg, it still offers sprightly performance – the 0-100 km/h dash being completed in less than 9 seconds.  The 2.0-litre unit features Mazda’s Skyactiv technology and you really do notice its extra power and torque out on the road.  You can scamper through the 0-100 km/h sprint two seconds quicker than the 1.5-litre alternative.  If quicker acceleration and a higher top end speed (around 220 Km/h) means more to you, then the 2.0-litre will be the one to go for.  The 2.0-litre variants are only slightly less frugal on fuel, too.  Either model will still provide the sort of driving entertainment that delights the soul.

Being seated in the Mazda MX-5 cockpit is really enjoyable.  You are low down, and Mazda’s way of serving up the switchgear and instrumentation is crisp and simple.  Easy-to-read and simple-to-use is the best way for offering switchgear, infotainment and technology.  Interior features include the Multimedia Commander knob which is located between the driver and passenger seat, and this allows you to operate the infotainment and connectivity systems.  A 7-inch touch screen in the centre of the dash connects you to all the entertainment and information systems.  Leather sports seats, electric windows and a Bose audio system with some of the speakers positioned in the headrest keep the driving experience magnificent.  Premium new Mazda MX-5 models can also provide features like heated seats, rain sensing wipers, smart keyless entry, a limited-slip diff, LED daytime running lights, climate control air-conditioning, cruise control, an adjustable speed limiter, an upgraded Multimedia Commander infotainment system, integrated Bluetooth with steering wheel-mounted controls, Internet app integration for internet radio, Facebook and Twitter, and DAB radio.

The all-new Retractable Fastback Mazda MX-5 RF delivers a unique level of design with a beautifully engineered hard-top that stows away in seconds.  First class driving pleasure is guaranteed in a new 2019 Mazda MX-5, and the added power for 2019 is definitely welcome.
