2018 Mazda 6 Turbo Sedan

2018 Mazda 6 Turbo Sedan

The 2018 Mazda 6 Turbo Sedan offers plenty more zip than the outgoing Mazda 6 for anybody hanging out for superb on-road dynamics and performance.  The standard models felt swift but the new Turbo adds lots of muscle.

Offering a 2.5-litre turbo makes the already fine Mazda 6 sedan an extra attractive proposition.  The new car boasts class-leading torque, feeling nice and lusty when poked along.  With over 170 kW of power and 420 Nm maximum torque the new Mazda 6 Turbo sedan is a driver’s car – more than capable of running with the leading bunch.  The maximum torque is offered from a very low 2000 rpm meaning that the meat in the Mazda 6 Turbo sandwich takes up a lot of space along the flat torque curve.

SkyActive engine technology means that all the latest mod-cons that optimise your driving experience in the 2018 Mazda 6 Turbo are there but also act to keep your fuel bill as low as possible.  Incidentally, it’s possible to run the new 6 Turbo on high-or-low octane petrol without affecting the maximum torque levels – nice.  The lower octane does blunt the maximum power slightly but that only takes affect right up in the higher engine revs – not a major.

Only the base models without the turbo engine will offer a manual option but the high-end Mazda 6 Turbos run with the slick new six-speed automatic gearbox that silkily slips from gear-to-gear.  You can use the auto gearbox in manual mode if the mood takes you there, and it’s an easy tiptronic style gear lever which you push forwards to move down the gears and back to move up through the gears.  There are also steering wheel paddle shifters for the racing drivers amongst us.  One of the treats of a new Mazda 6 Sedan is the car’s handling which is very good.  Always balanced and offering loads of grip, this is a benchmark car.  When it comes to ride quality, the Mazda 6 also impresses with the right level of firmness for road holding skills and then excellent dampening for soaking up the road bumps.

One always seems to notice the later Mazda 6 designs on the street because they are really classy and offer gorgeous lines.  The 2018 Mazda 6 Turbo is a decent family sedan that gives its occupants lots of seating space and comfort, and excellent luggage space; and then it looks so good while doing so.  Mazda designers need to be applauded for the way this lovely design continues to last, and will do well into the future – just like a good red wine.  Speaking of red, the 2018 Mazda 6 Turbo sedan has arguably the nicest red for its exterior colour; Mazda call it Soul Red.  When in sunlight the sexy 6 contours stand out in the light where they become beautifully accentuated.  Also, one of the nicest features of the car’s looks is in those lovely curves of the wide front wheel arches.  Blending the wide, low Mazda 6 stance with sleek, slim headlights and a bold chrome shelf which supports the grille and headlight formation at the front has the car oozing style.  The big chin air dam looks the goods and adds a visual impact to the sedan’s sporting credentials.

Slip around to the back of the new Mazda 6 Turbo sedan and the high boot line does mean that there is handy, practical luggage space in the boot.  Also, the car’s low front and high butt means that the car looks sporty right from the word go.  Large twin exhausts look great and definitely jazz up the plainer looking rear.  There is seriously plenty of space for carrying heaps of luggage, and there is even some levers inside the boot space (within easy reach when standing behind the car) to flip the rear seats forward for even more cargo space when required.  Rear seat occupants get plenty of leg room, as do the front seat occupants.  Taller people will notice the tapered roofline can close in a little on their head space, however.  Rear seat passengers get a centre fold arm rest with cup holders, USB ports and heated seat controls – very nice.

New Mazda 6 Turbo sedans come with some excellent modern features as standard.  Power windows, power mirrors and a reverse camera with 360 degree viewing set the ball rolling.  High-end models come with Nappa leather and are really very comfortable.  Again, the higher-end models also boast electronic seat and steering wheel adjustment, while the seats can also be heated.  It’s really hard to beat the gorgeous interior design which, ok, the dash is simple but it still looks very attractive with quality materials, lines and modern technology.

Some cool interior design features include door handles which are a continuation of the chrome strip running along the doors; there are trapezoidal air vents which stick out perky when the door is opened but integrate into the flowing door design when the door is closed again – again very cool!

Satellite navigation, Bose sound systems, climate air-conditioning, touch screen infotainment systems and Smartphone connectivity are all within a Mazda 6 Turbo sedans feature list.  Android Auto and Apple CarPlay also available.  Driver’s get a digital display for the instrument panel and this can be adjusted to a variety of settings and features.  It is digital but the look is analogue which is really cool.  Mazda boasts a very nice Heads-Up display in the front windscreen, seats with a cooling and heating function are offered, and there is even a multifunction steering wheel with a heating function, too.  Some of the safety features include Lane Keep Assist, Smart City Brake Support, Mazda Radar Cruise Control, ESC, Pedestrian Recognition and a full array of airbags.

Looking for a really nice family sedan that competes with the Accord, Camry, 5-Series and E-Class?  Then you’re going to be impressed with Mazda’s excellent 6 Turbo.  Pricewise it’s similar to where a Camry and Accord pitch their pricing but it is definitely less expensive than the two German competitors.

Get excited about the 2018 Mazda 6 Turbo Sedan because it’s a really great drive; we’re very impressed.
