Mahindra

Building off-roaders is in Mahindra’s DNA.  Back as far as 1947, Mahindra were building a version of the American Willys Jeep that continues as a bit of a cult vehicle.  The Indian company, Mahindra, entered the automotive world in 1947 with the building up of the iconic military Jeep.  Today, Mahindra is a large multinational company that is based in India.  It is one of India’s largest automotive manufacturers.

Mahindra Automotive is big, and it has, prior to covid, made over half a million cars per year.  These production numbers put in the same league as the joint Jaguar/Land Rover company, which is also an Indian based manufacturer.

Mahindra has owned a controlling interest in the Korean brand’s SsangYong since 2011.  Other recent motoring-related purchases include Peugeot Scooters and Italian design house Pininfarina. Mahindra is also the world’s largest manufacturer of tractors by volume, where 300,000 are made each year!  Mitsubishi Tractors is also owned by Mahindra, and it’s one of 10 primary partners in the Formula E series.

Mahindra is one of the most recent additions to Australia’s car sales yards.  With such strong credentials, Mahindra’s venturing into wider and more expansive global markets should prove successful, especially at a time where vehicles with a lower ticket price are being snapped up.

At the time of writing, in Australia, Mahindra offers a small range of utes as well as some SUVs.  The Pik-Up is available as a ute or cab-chassis, with options of dual and single-cab, 2WD or 4WD.  The Genio cab-chassis is also available in dual and single-cab, 2WD or 4WD.  Along with the utes, Mahindra offers the diesel-powered XUV-500 SUV wagon.  With the XUV you can buy it in 2WD and 4WD, as well.

You’ll find the Mahindra products well made and very robust.
