Jaguar F-Type Coupé

It just had to happen. Like the big cat it’s named for, Jaguar has been keeping quiet in the background over the last few years but has now pounced with a mighty roar into the limelight. We are pleased to let you know that the Jaguar F-Type Coupé is here!

Naturally, the Jaguar F-Type Coupé is a super-smooth and super-powerful sports car. It’s got the looks and it’s got the engine to make you purr.  Everything in the styling just says “sports car” and “luxury”… and that’s just the interior styling. The exterior, of course, is just pure Jaguar the way it always has been: svelte, athletic, aerodynamic and sophisticated. However, the large leaping jaguar emblem on the bonnet from years gone by has vanished to be replaced by a more aerodynamic big cat head on the front grille. The front end of the new Jaguar F-Type is also a touch more aggressive than some of the more refined models of the past, with the front headlights being slit-like bi-function HID xenon headlamps rather than the twin round lights of older models. There’s a slight hint of a shark in the styling – those air intakes look like gills… which, from the engine’s point of view, they are. Naturally, the styling has kept driving pleasure and performance in mind, and that low profile means a low centre of gravity, which means more on-road stability. They put the Jaguar F-Type Coupé around the Nürburgring as well as a number of other tough tests to make sure that it performs perfectly.

One of the more innovative styling features you’ll find on the Jaguar F-Type Coupé is the door handles. Door handles aren’t something we think about much, but in the F-Type, they’ve managed to make handles that retract to fit flush against the vehicle’s sides when you don’t actually have to use them. This makes for even better aerodynamics and air flow. Another interesting style features found in all model of Jaguar F-Type Coupé is the spoiler. This automatically deploys when the needle hits the 100 km/h mark, meaning that you get the extra downforce and grip created by the spoiler when you need it. When you get off the open road and the speedo gets below 60 km/h, the spoiler retracts again, giving the Jaguar F-Type Coupé its super-smooth silhouette again. The Active Sports Exhaust found in the F-Type S has been carefully designed for maximum aural pleasure, tuned to capture the deep roaring note of the engine perfectly. In the luxurious R model, you can select whether or not you want the more distinctive sound on or off – after all, you want to be discreet at times.

The type of engine beneath that fierce-looking bonnet will depend on the actual model of Jaguar F-Type that you prefer. The baseline F-Type Coupé is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 supercharged petrol engine that slams the top of the power curve at 250 kW and has a maximum torque of    . The next model up the rank is the Jaguar F-Type S Coupé, which also has a 3-litre V6 supercharged petrol engine, but this one is able to bang out 280 kW of power. But the godfather of them all is the Jaguar F-Type R Coupé, with a 5-litre engine that can push out a startling 404 kW of power. There are other differences between the models on top of the different engine types, which are mostly found in the trim level and also in the handling: the S has Active Dynamic Sports suspension and high performance braking, while the R adds in Jaguar Super Performance braking (with red brake callipers), for example. While fuel economy is unlikely to be a major concern for the market segment most likely to purchase a new Jaguar F-Type Coupé, this is maximised by use of the stop/start engine function.

All three varieties of Jaguar F-Type Coupé have the same transmission system: an 8-speed Quickshift automatic transmission – with gear shift paddles on the leather-wrapped steering wheel for the Quickshift part of that equation, of course. The transmission practically thinks for itself with the corner recognition, the speed matching management system and the spontaneous vehicle deceleration, the last of which kicks in during hard braking. That steering wheel also features the jaguar logo proudly in the centre as well as the controls for the phone and audio.

Driving a car like the Jaguar F-Type Coupé is practically entertainment in itself, so the features that are provided in this department almost seem superfluous. However, the new Jag is fitted out with a Meridian 380-watt sound system with all the inputs as well as 12 channels and 10 speakers… just in case you tire of listening to the engine. The eight-inch colour touch screen provides information on everything from what’s playing over the sound system to where you need to go next. Needless to say, the sports seats are superbly comfortable, and the designers have more or less laid the car out around the driver. While the Jaguar F-Type Coupé does have rear seats, this is a car for a driver and one very lucky passenger. The S model also adds a bit of extra fun in the form of the customisable ambient lighting, which allows you to select one of five colour shades for illuminating the interior: plain white, two shades of blue and two reddish shades (red would be good for night-time driving, as it would allow the driver to see around the interior and allow the passenger to read but won’t affect the driver’s night vision).

In a car this powerful, safety is all-important, and there are plenty of features to ensure that the Jaguar F-Type Coupé keeps its big paws on the road. The brakes play a large part in this, and the developers have devoted a lot of attention to ensuring that the brakes are made of the best materials and are just as responsive and strong as they should be – while avoiding skids and other problems. The dynamics and handling also have the aim of safety in mind, along with driver enjoyment. Around town in busy traffic, the pedestrian sensing safety system should help prevent unfortunate incidents (although at high speeds on the open road, this won’t have time to kick in and the brakes and your eyes will be all that you’ve got). Speed limited cruise control, blind spot monitoring, reverse traffic detection, front and rear park assist and adaptive front lighting all do their thing.
