2018 Jaguar I-PACE

Jaguar I-PACE

Grahame Kenneth wrote a particularly loved novel called ‘The Wind in the Willows’.  I wonder if the character Toad, had he been around today, might have been captured by the striking lines of the new Jaguar I-Pace and desired one of these.  It is one of the most technologically advanced mid-size SUVs with plenty of performance to match.  I’m sure he might exclaim “The real way to travel!  Here today – in next week tomorrow!  Villages skipped, towns and cities jumped – always somebody else’s horizon!  O poop-poop!  O my!  O my!

Jaguar has made something very special in the new Jaguar I-Pace.  The looks alone are sultry and sexy.  It’s nice because it looks unique and flowing, different from other SUVs on the road.  That’s what you want, an SUV that sets you apart and makes a statement.  But it’s not all about the sporty looks.  Jaguar has designed the I-Pace as an ultimate all-electric performance SUV, so get excited, grab your jacket, and let’s be off!

Jaguar’s I‑Pace, to look at from the outside, has a compact footprint that looks lower than an SUV really should be.  That’s because Jaguar have kept the ground clearance low to ensure that the I-Pace really will fly through the corners with a low centre of gravity.  Its low slung roof line and bulging high waistline blend beautifully with the edgy window lines.  The I-Pace looks spicy and attractive with a design that definitely shouts ‘racy’!

Clever methods of design have ensured that there is mammoth space inside the new I-Pace.  There are five comfortable seats, and innovative storage swallows plenty of access items for the journey ahead – actually, there is 27 litres in the front storage compartment alone.  Boot space is impressive; the new I-Pace comes with 656 litres of cargo room with the rear seats upright and in place.  Fold both split-fold rear seats flat and the cargo room grows to 1453 litres.  As the I-Pace is a BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle), the batteries are stored underneath the boot floor, completely out of the way and not taking away any practical space for the cabin and boot areas.

Hop inside the driver’s seat and the feel of the I-Pace cockpit is all Jaguar – just the way a Jaguar should feel: warm, welcoming, cosseting, sporty, luxurious and fashionable.  Get your mitts on the small, chunky steering wheel and the circular shape is echoed symmetrically behind in the nicely styled digital driver’s display.  The driver’s display is a large, clear, modern information display with virtual graphics and gorgeous lighting themes.

The driver’s seat really feels lovely and supportive (especially HSE models); of course, it is adjustable electronically and also boasts heating and memory functions.  Steering wheel adjustment is rake and reach, so it is easy to locate the right driving position.  All the necessary switchgear for audio, cruise control, Bluetooth etc is located on the steering wheel, making life really easy for the driver to adjust settings.  Nice shiny chrome detailing is matched with soft leather fabric throughout the dash, centre console, steering wheel and door areas.  It’s all very nice!

Central in the dash is the wide infotainment screen which its touch driven action.  Under the main screen is another touchscreen that drives the climate control functions for the zoned occupant areas.  Big chrome-rimmed dials beside the small screen can also be used to set the temperature.  Nice!  There is a mini archway behind the temperature control screen that acts as excellent storage space, and it actually keeps things hidden away a bit more out of sight for an uncluttered and less messy look to the front cabin space.  So, you can put your wallet, tickets, handbag, glasses and the like in this area.  Pretty cool!

A really deep central bin between the two front seats also provides awesome storage space, and inside the bin are auxiliary points for charging phones and other devices.  Door bins can take bottles, while the centre console happily holds two large coffee cups and your cell phone – all vertically.

Life in the rear seats is very roomy for adults seated by the windows.  There is heaps of leg and head room.  Middle seat passengers will need to be slightly shorter to avoid touching the roof.  But as it stands, the Jaguar i-Pace is a practical family sports/luxury SUV.  Some of the models can be kitted out with the panoramic glass roof which has a special tinting material like you have on sunglasses to keep the really bright UV rays out of the cabin area.  This glass roof does give a very special, bright atmosphere to the I-Pace cabin.  Under the middle rear seat is a specially designed cubby space for holding your iPad.

Your Jaguar I-Pace comes with a special key fob that has a memory function for your seat position and climate control settings.  You can also use your Smartphone to connect with the I-Pace to find out various information about charge readiness, servicing and pre-cabin warming functions.

If you’ve never driven a Jaguar I-Pace then, be warned, it has colossal acceleration.  You can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in less time it takes to say this sentence – less than five seconds!  Instant power the moment you plant your right foot comes from the 400 horses under the bonnet –or 80,000 ducks –or 294 kW.  AWD and great fun, the new Jaguar I-Pace has really good road holding, a little fidgety around town, but that’s understandable with the car’s sporty flavour.  You can get the I-Pace with an air suspension, so this would definitely smooth out the bumps a whole lot more around town.  A 50:50 weight distribution gives the new I-Pace awesome handling for those who love to drive fast and feel Jaguar’s true handling prowess.  Being an AWD also means that you can venture off-road as well – just be sure there is a charging station in Alice Springs!

Charging time can be a bit long winded if you haven’t got a speed charging station nearby, so to fully charge the new I-Pace on you standard home socket can take many hours – so a little inconvenient.  But, you can travel around 450 kilometres on a full charge which is very good.  Like a petrol car, the faster you drive the less economical it will be.

There are three new Jaguar I-Pace models offered.  The S is supposedly the base model, but even with this one you’ll be gob-smacked with the amount of kit on-board.  As a teaser, the Jaguar I-Pace S comes with: 18-inch 15 spoke alloys, striking LED headlights, 8-way semi-powered Luxtec sport seats, Touch Pro Duo, Interactive Driver Display and a Meridian Sound System and the Parking Package.  Connectivity features include: Remote, Navigation Pro, Connect Pro (Smart Settings, Pro Services, a 4G Wi-Fi Hotspot), a Smartphone Pack and Secure Tracker.

Jaguar cars look and feel like no other car on the road.  Moving to all-electric power doesn’t change this, and the new Jaguar I‑PACE is a pure Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) that is thrilling to look at and drive.  Jaguar’s new I‑Pace is sensational.  Poop!  Poop!  O my!  O my!
