2021 Hyundai Palisade

2021 Hyundai Palisade

Looking smooth and comfortable, the 2021 Hyundai Palisade is one large SUV for the family in need of space.  Its modern styling sets it apart, thanks aplenty to Hyundai’s superb design team; they’ve been chalking up many award winning designs recently.  The Palisade is the latest offering from Hyundai and it’s also the largest SUV in Hyundai’s line-up.  If you thought that the Santa Fe was big, then think bigger because the Palisade has loads more room behind the front seats.

As you can see from the pictures, the 2021 Hyundai Palisade has the looks aimed at the American market.  Its boxier shape is in keeping with other large SUVs on the market, however the detailing and styling is classier than most.  Having a long and high roofline enables the Palisade to offer seating for up to eight occupants.  Even those in the third row will be impressed with the general space, though the second row is the place to be if you’re a leggier adult settling in for a long trip.  You can get the new Hyundai Palisade with the middle row offering two ‘captains chairs’, and, if you happen to be sitting in any one of these, you’re treated to maximum comfort.  Designed superbly for the large family, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to learn of the on-board intercom feature which can have the front seat occupants communicating easily with the third-row sitters.

2021 Hyundai Palisade

To move the large Palisade, Hyundai have gone with the very good, reliable 2.2-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder motor with AWD or the RWD 3.8-litre V6 petrol option.  Go for the diesel, and a strong 147 kW of power and superior 440 Nm of torque does the business nicely.  Buyers of the 2.2-litre turbodiesel will work with a 0-100 km/h sprint time of around 10.5 seconds as well as a top speed of 190 km/h.  In the real world of speed limits and congestion the 2.2 turbodiesel performs well, however passing slower vehicles on the open road requires a decent open stretch of road.  You should easily see lower than 8 litres/100 km out on the open road.

Petrol fans will like the smooth and quiet V6 engine, which can run onto 210 km/h and see off a 0-100 km/h dash in around 8.5 seconds.  The 3.8 V6 is creamy smooth with plenty of grunt but it also has the thirstier appetite.  Both engines are paired with a slick eight-speed automatic and are quite capable of pulling the fully-laden big SUV along effortlessly.  The ride comfort is good over any surface and the grip excellent.  AWD will be handy for those who need to head off-road or up the ski slopes.

There are just the two models available for Australia at the moment; differentiated by whether it’s a diesel or petrol motor under the bonnet.  Hyundai has placed a lot of excellent kit into the Palisade variants. The digital screens are top notch and there’s a quality feel all about the cabin.  An Infinity audio system has a superb quality for the music fans amongst us and the sumptuous leather interior feels delicious.  Wireless charging and seven USB outlets make running mobile technology a breeze.

All the latest safety systems are standard, so things like active cruise control, lane-keep assist and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection are all there.  Although ANCAP hasn’t rated the new Hyundai Palisade yet, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the U.S. has done so; where they gave the Palisade the full five stars.

Hyundai’s main competitors to the Palisade will likely be the Lexus LX, Toyota Landcruiser and the Nissan Patrol.   These are the other big SUVs with eight-seat options.  The Palisade is nice looking and competitive amidst this sort of company.  Volvo and other mainstream European SUV potential-buyers should have a drive of a Palisade and get the low-down on what it offers.  This is a good package.
