2021 Haval Jolion

2021 Haval Jolion medium-size SUV

Haval has hit us with another nice SUV.  This time it is the smallest on offer, and it’s called the Haval Jolion SUV.  I have to say that the design is very attractive, and we should thank the ex-Jaguar designer for that.  It is comfortable, well-priced, and loaded.  What more could you want in a roomy, medium SUV?

The Haval Jolion features heaps of chrome in the bold grille at the front, along with some pretty snazzy headlights with 4 main LED bulbs per cluster.  I like the vertical slashes down each front-end corner, both housing the DRLs.  Indicators are three bars per side, and they are nestled under the T in the headlight cluster.  The appearance, front on, packs a punch, and it is one of the classiest mid-size SUVs around.

Head around to the back of the vehicle, and the design is distinctive and pleasant; the taillights are shaped in a set square, where they extend into the bootlid and around the edges of the body.  A shark fin antenna is a nice sporty touch, and this is set right at the back of the roof above the tailgate.

Stand side on, and you notice a pronounced bulge around the bottom of the doors, which give the new Jolion a sturdy, muscley appearance.  The Haval Jolion Ultra is the top of the range model, and with this variant the small SUV boasts some classy 18-inch rims that fill out the arches very neatly.

The Haval Jolion medium SUV is 4472 mm long, 1841 mm wide, and 1574 mm high.  You get a 2700 mm wheelbase, and the luggage capacity behind the rear seats, which are split folding, is 430 litres.  You know what?  I can’t argue with the Haval Jolion’s pricing.  You can get into a top of the range model with all the bells and whistles for around $31k.  Base models start at around $26k.

Under the hood is a very healthy engine that’s well-suited to the Jolion’s size.  The powertrain is a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol inline 4-cylinder motor that puts out 110 kW of power and 210 Nm of torque.  All Haval Jolions are FWD and they use a sweet 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.  Expect a combined fuel economy of less than 9 litres/100 km.  The Jolion has CO2emissions that equate to 186 g/km.  In a world of shared capital and knowledge, Haval draws upon engineering expertise from Daimler and BMW.

Being loaded with excellent safety features gives you a real peace of mind when driving the smallest Haval.  Every safety acronym you can think of is on-board this little beauty.  Autonomous emergency braking, a traction control system, hill-hold control, lane-keep assist and active cruise control are some of the goodies included in the package.  So too are new technologies that includes the coloured LED instrument cluster, a head-up display, wireless phone charging and fatigue monitoring. Universally standard in all Jolion models are autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition and rear cross traffic alert.  Though, as yet, not ANCAP tested, it is sure to perform very well, I should think.

Inside this medium-size SUV is a small, metallic rotary dial that is responsible for changing the gears.  There are paddle shifters available, as well.  You’ll find a nicely textured leatherette dashboard, with a few central touch controls for the air conditioning/climate control system.  There is a power button for the audio system, and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen (10.25-inches on Premium and Lux models) sits handsomely in the middle of the dash.  It is a nice cabin; the seats are supportive and comfy; the driver gets 6-way electronic control over the position in the two models above the Premium.  Wireless phone charging is standard on the Haval Jolion Ultra models, as is a head-up display.  Driving modes include Eco, Normal, Sport and Snow.  These are some heavy-hitting big ticket items that are yours for the taking at a very decent price!

Head into the back seats, and rear passengers should be pretty happy back there.  Plenty of leg and headroom in the back seats is present for taller adults.  There is a fold-down pair of cupholders in the middle seat, and you’ll find a handy space beneath the rear seats for storage.

Out and about in the 2021 Haval Jolion will have you impressed with the superb chassis, grip and comfort.  The Jolion’s chassis is happy to be tossed around a bit while still maintaining a good degree of comfort and flexibility.  One might be led to believe that Daimler and BMW may have played a big hand in this department?  The engine provides good punch starting off, and though there are paddle shifters available for use, the excellent transmission does a great job of keeping things moving along as they should.

There’s little else in the market that offers the sort of size, style, space, technology and attractive design for similar Haval Jolion pricing.  An MG ZS or a Kia Seltos might be tempting; however, those wanting a quality daily driver for the family at a superb price might well be very content with the 2021 Haval Jolion mid-size SUV.
