Ford Falcon FGX Ute

It might be the last of the Falcon utes, but we might as well enjoy it while it’s here.  The Ford Falcon FGX Ute looks like a real ute should with its muscle, low profile lines and an effective load-carrying capacity.  If you’re going to be doing some serious miles, then this is a mile-munching ute par-excellence.  Few utes can cruise as effortlessly and as comfortably as the big Falcon ute can, and with such accessible torque throughout the engine revs the FGX Falcon tows and carries big loads no problems at all.

Under the hood, the latest FGX Falcon Ute gets the muscly I6 engine.  Smooth power delivery and copious amounts of torque give the ute a relaxed driving experience.  Inside the cabin, the engine sound is quiet and unstressed.  Even when poked for quick acceleration a low down rumble is a delight rather than a stress factor.

Ford Falcon Ute Cab Chassis and Styleside Box are the two model shapes available, though you have the choice of three awesome engines.  An EcoLPi motor is available for the greenies amongst us.  It’s actually more torque-driven than the base model inline 6-cylinder.  Performance freaks will enjoy the I6 Turbo motor used for powering the Turbo model.  So, for the statisticians, the EcoLPi I6 boasts 198 kW and 409 Nm, the standard I6 petrol packs 195 kW and 391 Nm, while the I6 Turbo model packs 270 kW and 533 Nm.  As far as towing potential goes, let’s just say quietly that the new 2016 Falcon Ute out performs the Holden Ute with ease.  The Falcon ute is good for towing 2.3 tonnes.  Just a note here; if you’re opting for the I6 engine, then you will have the choice of a six-speed manual alongside the six-speed auto.

One of the things I love about the FGX Falcon Ute – not to mention a number of the previous models – is the roomy and relaxed seating position.  This is a perfect recipe for long distance comfort, and with cruise control and smooth automatic gear changes, I can’t think of a better work ute for most work situations.  Unless you need some serious off-road capability, this is the ute you would find me driving by preference.  I just hope that the folks at Ford remember this and can offer an equally admirable replacement if/when necessary.

Out on the road, the new FGX Falcon Ute has a tight grip on the road.  It’s happy to be chucked in and out of corners at speed without any freaky moments, while the high speed stability is solid and safe.  This is a vehicle that feels like it could handle much more than the speed limits suggest.  In the wet, the ABS and ESC systems take charge in emergency situations.  Little wind noise and well muted road noise help to make the ride quality excellent.  The new Falcon Ute is not easily unsettled on rough roads.

Actually, the FG X Falcon is the most technologically advanced and intuitive Falcon ever made.  With state of the art connectivity features, an innovative colour touch screen and cleverly laid out command controls, you’ve got everything you need to control occupant comfort, climate and communications.  This is an Exec Ute, made for the hardworking man and woman.  Keeping in touch with clients and family is a breeze, and you can plug in most smart phones which will be able to be read by the on-board multi-function display.  Negotiating a deal, making an appointment is just so easy with Bluetooth mobile phone integration where you can make the most of hands-free communication while you drive.

XR6 models get a few other features to add to the standard model which include: a flush fit soft tonneau cover, a sports suspension, daytime running lights, rain sensing wipers, front scuff plates, 18-inch alloy wheels, a sports leather wrapped steering wheel, cloth trim sports seats, an alloy sports bar, a Limited Slip Differential (LSD), projector headlamps and fog lamps.  Optional extras include the XR Luxury Pack: 19-inch alloy wheels, leather accented sports seats, a premium audio system and dual-zone climate control.

Safety features are excellent.  With side head/thorax airbags, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) standard across the range, the FGX Falcon Ute has the best safety rating, too.

Get the job done in what could be the very last Falcon Ute we’ll see.  It’s a ute that drives like a car – just right for me!
