Falcon Turbo

Ford Falcon Turbo

Ford Falcon Turbo

Comfortable, large and fast, the new Ford Falcon 4.0-litre Turbo models provides one of the nicest, and reasonably priced, ways to travel by car in Australia.  Topped with plenty of luxury features and heaps of room for the largest adult, the new Ford Falcon XR6 is an understated performance car with great looks.

Boasting a 4.0-litre, DOHC, Turbo inline six-cylinder and 270 kW of power at 5250 rpm, both of the Falcon Turbo models can really pack on the performance; yet they remain relaxed and quiet whatever the speed.  The engine is smooth, and it feels relatively under-strained, with loads of torque available in down low and in the middle of the engine range.  You can opt for the six-speed manual transmission or the ZF six-speed automatic transmission with a sequential sports shift if you go for the Falcon XR6 Turbo model.  The Falcon G6E has the auto as standard.  I’m guessing that most of you will go for the auto, and I’m with you on that because I like the relaxed drive.  Incidentally, the auto is better on gas.

Handling is held nicely together with sport rated suspension and brakes, and the light and nimble road-holding is satisfying and rewarding.  This well engineered large sedan puts the power down on the road quickly and in a well-controlled manner via the rear wheels and a limited-slip differential.  Traction control means that the new 4.0-litre Ford Falcon Turbo models still provide predictable handling, even in the wet.  4-Channel ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) keep the performance levels in check along with the Dynamic Stability Control – which is standard on both Falcon Turbo models.

An 8-inch colour touch screen is a standard feature  on both models, while the G6E Turbo gets the premium audio system with AM/FM Radio, Digital broadcast radio, single slot CD, nine-speakers, a 150 watt amplifier and subwoofer.  XR6 Turbo models come with just the six speakers; however, the sound quality of the base system is already very good.  A satellite navigation system with traffic messaging, Bluetooth mobile phone communication, cruise control with steering wheel mounted switches, a Human Machine Interface (HMI) system with an Interior Command Centre, Alloy pedals, dual-zone automatic climate control, front and rear power windows, remote keyless entry and electronic front seats are standard XR6 features.  Some other features that the Falcon G6E Turbo has (which the standard XR6 Turbo doesn’t get) are leather seats, an eight-way memory driver’s seat and power adjustable side mirrors, to name a few.  The XR6 luxury pack does add a few more mods onto a standard XR6 Turbo package, so you can add things like leather trim sports seats, an upgrade to the nine-speaker premium sound system and 19-inch alloys.

Leg and shoulder room is first class in both the front and the rear seats, while the Ford Falcon Turbo comes standard with cup holders and plenty of interior storage space.  Boot space is above average in its class, and so the big sedan can swallow over 550 litres of cargo in the boot.

Where the 4.0-litre Ford Falcon Turbo models really shine is in engine torque.  These cars have masses of torque, and you can load these sedans up with the family and luggage, and the performance is still remarkable.  With as much as 533Nm available from between 2000rpm and 4750 rpm, this places the Falcon 4.0-litre sedan well ahead of the SIDI Commodore 3.6-litre rival, and even the BMW 740i.  Top speed for these cars are around 270 km/h, and they can run the 0-100 km/h dash in a smidgeon over five seconds.  So, yes these are quick and are a vehicle that demands respect on the road.

Each of the new 4.0-litre Ford Falcon Turbo models do boast the best in five-star safety, so it’s nice to know that the 2016 Falcon is up to the task of keeping you and your family as safe as possible.

I like the more refined exterior design of the new 2016 Falcon, and with the extra sport detailing that goes along with the Ford Falcon Turbo sedans, the look is charming indeed.
