2022 Fiat Ducato

2022 Fiat Ducato

Ducato vans are huge.  They can carry a pallet, carry bikes, take those flowers to the market, collect the pensioners, take the NRL team to the physio, be part of the logistics solution, run around Australia as a campervan – the list seems endless.  But they are built for this purpose; built big, to go hard, and they’re built tough.

For 2022, there is a new Fiat Ducato van you can update to, and the good news is they are competitively priced, run like clockwork, offer an excellent servicing plan to go with the purchase, and they have a big warranty when you buy one of these vans new.

Three sizes of the new Fiat Ducato van are available: The L1 H1, L2 H1, and the L2 H2.  Let’s compare load space then: The L1 H1 gets 8 m3 to fill behind the front seats, the L2 H1 gets 10 m3, and the L2 H2 gets 11.5 m3.  The biggest is, obviously, the Fiat Ducato L2 H2 model where you’ll see that the roof height is taller, thus making the two side doors and rear door opening taller and easier to get really big items within.  The other two versions have a side loading height of 1662 mm compared with the 1932 mm of the biggest variant.

Fiat says it can also offer more options than the three above, as well as customisation. So with three body heights, five body lengths, and four powerplants all set across a range of panel vans, window vans, people-carriers, chassis cabs, chassis cowls, or conversion bases, you should find one to suit!  The beauty of the new Ducato is that all of the essential powertrain elements are kept within the confines of the cab area, making it such a popular base for conversion.  Fiat campervans and motorhomes are thus popular converters.

This year (2022), the Fiat Ducato ditched the decent 2.3-litre engines for a selection of 2.2-litre units shared with its sister vans.  They still offer the same power and torque figures but offer superior efficiency.  On top of that, the engine now offers a nine-speed automatic transmission as an option on all but the entry-level motor.  The diesel powertrains available are:

  • 88 kW / 320Nm 2.2-litre six-speed manual
  • 103 kW / 350Nm 2.2-litre (same torque with the optional 9-speed automatic gearbox)
  • 118 kW / 380Nm 2.2-litre (400Nm with the optional 9-speed automatic gearbox)
  • 133 kW / 400Nm 2.2-litre (450Nm with the optional 9-speed automatic gearbox)

Fiat claims the new engines are up to 7% more efficient than their predecessors, which has also been helped by a 15kg weight loss.  The new Ducato now comes with electric power steering so that advanced driver aids could integrate properly.  Electric power steering in a big van like this also makes it very user friendly and a doddle to swerve about town.

Also available is a Fiat E-Ducato electric van, so if you want to run around Sydney in a new E-Ducato, you’ll be looking pretty Green and stylish.  The reasonably priced E-Ducato (compared with the limited range of e-vans on the market) has competitive pricing with high payloads and a comparatively long driving range.

When it comes to safety features, the 2022 Fiat Ducato is a clear winner.  There aren’t many better commercial vans out there in terms of occupant safety.  The new Ducato has very impressive active assistance systems that include the addition of a huge array of semi-autonomous driver aids.  Features like adaptive cruise control and automatic lane-keeping aids which can actually drive the van semi-autonomously in traffic jams or on the motorway is now something you can add to list.

A 10.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless smartphone connectivity and a wireless charger as well as a digital rear-view mirror add to the impressive kit roster that would make some luxury car owners a bit envious!  Currently, all 2022 Fiat Ducato vans get Bluetooth connectivity, and even the base model has a decent touchscreen infotainment system.

Entry-level Ducato vans come with all of the following:

  • Fixed steel bulkhead
  • Dead locks
  • Heated diesel fuel filter
  • 15-inch steel wheels with full-size spare
  • Driver’s seat with armrest and lumbar support
  • Dual passenger seat
  • 5.0-inch screen with DAB, Bluetooth and USB connection
  • Radio controls on the steering wheel
  • Electric, heated door mirrors
  • Lane departure warning system
  • Advanced emergency braking
  • Electronic stability control
  • Driver’s airbag
  • Speed limiter

Upgrade to the Ducato Tecnico specification and you also get:

  • Keyless entry and start
  • Rear View Camera
  • 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus voice control button on steering wheel
  • Wireless phone charging
  • Manual air-conditioning
  • Techno dashboard
  • Electric parking brake

You can also upgrade this to automatic climate control, at which point the van is labelled a Tecnico Plus.

At the top of the new Ducato range is the Business Edition, which adds:

  • 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster
  • 10-inch touchscreen with sat-nav
  • Electric-folding heated electric door mirrors

Really tall drivers may struggle to find enough room behind the steering wheel, otherwise it’s a decent cabin space to be in for the long haul.

So, plenty of power and torque, high payload ratings, a wide choice of variants, already available with impressive safety and entertainment kit, and now boasting a great 9-speed automatic gearbox do add up to a very decent van to buy in 2022.
