2022 BMW 2 Series Sedan

2022 BMW 2 Series Sedan

A classy little number that’s recently made its way to Australia is BMW’s new 2 Series Sedan.  From every angle the compact sedan looks good; its slightly chunky lines, thanks to the car’s smaller dimensions, doing wonders for the car’s aggressive, sporty stance.  Am I allowed to say that I reckon this is possibly the best looking Beemer currently in the room?

The BMW 2 Series Sedan comes in four models.

The least expensive model starts at the 218i M Sport Sedan.  You can buy this version for less than $60k, making it a BMW within range of those looking to buy an upmarket Mazda or Hyundai equivalent.  In this tidy wee package, BMW has placed its punchy little 3-cylinder 1.5-litre Turbo petrol engine, which is linked to a 7-speed automatic that feeds the power through to the FWD set-up.  Peak power is 103 kW, somewhat similar to the sweet 318iS of yesteryear (1991 to be exact).  Along with the free-revving engine’s peak power comes a handy 220 Nm of torque, and while these figures won’t raise many eyelids, the way the small and athletic BMW 218i M Sport Sedan applies its laws of physics is refreshing.  Given the beans, the car will happily sprint from 0–100 km/h in around 9 seconds, then continue out to a top speed of over 210 km/h.

To drive, the 218i sedan remains well planted at any highway speeds, and about town it rides confidently.  Road noise is reasonably well suppressed, although, like other equivalent European models, it can get a little invasive on poorly surfaced roads.  The car is happy to dawdle about town hours on end.  However, poke the throttle open, and there’s fun to be had pushing the plucky little 3-cylinder engine towards its redline. BMW claims the 218i can do 5.9 litres/100 km while drinking 95 RON premium unleaded.  Stop/Start technology is a standard feature and aids the fuel efficiency cause.

So, what do you get in a new BMW 218i M Sport Sedan?  Coming standard in the package are things like an M Sport exterior package, 18-inch alloy wheels (can upgrade to 19-inch), the M Sport suspension, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, satellite navigation, DAB+ digital radio, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, automatic stop/start technology, LED headlights with LED front fog lights, automatic headlights, ambient interior lighting, rain-sensing wipers, a smart black cloth/sensatec upholstery trim, climate control, wireless phone charging, and a decent six-speaker sound system.

Grab yourself the comfort package, and you’ll also get keyless entry, electrically-adjusted front seats with electric lumbar adjustment, and heated front seats.  The Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control, Matrix LED headlights with auto high-beam, and a tyre-pressure monitoring system.  For just over $1k, having the adaptive cruise control is a handy investment.

Stepping up to the 2.0-litre petrol 4-cylinder you find in the 220i M Sport Sedan sees you gain a few more horses under the bonnet.  141 kW of power and 280 Nm of torque add a little more go to the flow.  Acceleration through to 100 km/h from a standstill can be over in as little as 7.5 seconds.

Of course, if more power and more speed is what you want, then the 2.0-litre Turbo is tweaked even more.  The extra power makes both the M235i xDrive Pure and the flagship M235i xDrive the ones to go for if performance is what you’re after.  xDrive also means AWD, so you’ve got the grip for all weather driving, and the car’s 225 kW and 450 Nm has loads of muscle for mixing it with many cars with bigger engines.  A limited top speed of 250 km/h and a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 4.8 seconds delivers the goods on the performance front.

All four BMW 2 Series Sedans have the goodies and the structural rigidity to pull off another five-star result for BMW.  Front, side and curtain airbags, AEB (low-speed) with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera, are all standard equipment.  The Head-Up Display is an excellent feature.

These new 2022 2 Series Sedans still offer driving ergonomics that are better than most.  You’ll find a decent driving position behind the chunky steering wheel, and everything is within easy reach.  This little BMW still offers loads of quality in the fit and finish of the car.  The quality of materials and trim is generally very good.  All the buttons and dials click and move in a premium kind-of-way, and there are no squeaks and rattles, with no movement in the centre console.  The car feels well-built and all nicely solid.

Rear seat space is tight for taller adults; however, you’d expect that in a smaller car like this.  Need more space in the rear seats?  Then buy a 3 or 5 series, or maybe a Honda Accord.  Mazda’s 3 even offers more back seat space.  But the space is fine if you’re not really catering for carting people about on a regular basis.  A handy 430 litre boot space is decent and can be made more via split folding rear seats.  Storage spaces abound throughout the new 2 Series Sedan’s interior, and there are both USB-A and USB-C ports up front. There’s also a wireless phone charger.

The driving experience of the BMW 2 Series Sedan is special.  If you’re like me and appreciate its nice, attractive looks, its excellent driving experience, sweet responsive engines, smart looking interiors, and excellent ergonomics, this will be the everyday Beemer I’d be wanting to drive.  A 3-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty comes with any of the new BMW 2 Series Sedans.

Yes, there is a Honda Accord, a Subaru WRX, and the Astina Mazda 3 that you can buy for similar money.  Yes, they’re worth a look and are excellent in their own right.  But, if you like driving a Beemer and appreciate the way BMWs deliver their driving experience, then the 2 Series Sedan is going to be the one you’ll take away with you.
