2021 BMW X5 M Competition

2021 BMW X5 M Competition

If you are after an SUV with some serious balls, then you’ll be nuts not to consider the latest BMW X5M.  This fantastic machine delivers the goods on the performance front, then envelopes its occupants in luxury and comfort for the long haul.  While no serious bush basher, there is good traction for off-road work, and there is an array of new technology that has made its way into the 2021 BMW X5 M Competition.

You can get your new X5M in Manhattan Metallic, Black Sapphire Metallic, Tanzanite Blue Metallic, Ametrine Metallic, Alpine White Solid, Mineral White Metallic, M Carbon Black Metallic, M Marina Bay Blue Metallic, Dravit Grey Metallic, M Donington Grey Metallic and M Toronto Red Metallic.  In any of these colours you will be making a statement arriving in a new X5M.  It sits on massively wide alloys, has stunning alloy designs, rumbles on approach and somehow manages to make an SUV shape look sporty – a feat that many sporty SUVs have not achieved as effectively as BMW has achieved it with their current X5 models, and none more so than with the exceptionally nice X5 M Competition.

The 2021 X5 range has plenty of engines to choose from.  The 2.0-litre diesel xDrive 25d (170 kW/450 Nm), the 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel xDrive 30d M Sport (195 kW/620 Nm), the 3.0-litre petrol xDrive 40i M Sport (250 kW/450 Nm), the 4.4-litre V8 M50i (390 kW/750 Nm) and the mighty X5 M Competition.  This is the one we’re looking at here and it punches out a huge 460 kW of power and generates 750 Nm of torque.  This immense AWD luxury SUV can reach 100 km/h from zero in 3.8 seconds.  For outstanding economy, the BMW X5 45 e M Sport Hybrid quotes a miserly 2.3 litres/100 km – simply outstanding!

BMW’s fourth generation X5 feels very much like a sporty luxury SUV should feel.  It is now longer, wider and taller than the previous model, and today’s BMW X5 offers superlative cabin comfort and versatile loading capabilities.  The seats up the front of the 2021 BMW X5 M Competition are all electric and can adjust seemingly limitlessly and, of course, they are upholstered in quality leather.  Night-time driving is made especially nice with BMW’s array of ambient interior lighting functions and colour tones.  Flicking through the multi-zone climate control menus has your new X5 M Competition as snug-as for the on-board sleeping baby or aging mother in-law.  The opposite is necessary and true, as the heat in the Ozzie sun can be tamed with the immensely refreshing cabin cooling system onboard the X5 M Competition SUV.

You slip into the snug fitting M-Sport driver’s seat, and with the useful memory functions you can have your own individual seating position set in a jiffy.  The multi-function steering wheel is compact and gorgeous to the touch, and it boasts easy-to-use gear shifters.  The engine is started via the red starter button down by the gear lever, so once the key fob has arrived in proximity, all you have to do is push the button.  Head off in this big sports luxury SUV, and the ride is firm but nice and supple, and you can opt for which suspension driver mode you prefer.  There is the comfort setting, which is the mode I would probably live with because I like taking things in a relaxed manner.  Even in comfort mode the new X5M Competition feels as solid as a rock when you put your foot down and slip effortlessly passed slower traffic.  Sport and Sport+ modes make this a track day car where you can show off with all the driver assistance systems dialled in so that you can look like a better driver than you really are.  The grip of the AWD system is phenomenal, and even in the wet the traction is prodigious.

But, as I say, I like to enjoy big kW and Nm numbers in a relaxed ride environment, so, flick on the active cruise control, dial up Digital Radio and Spotify through the premium sound system and touring doesn’t get any better than in a new BMW X5 M Competition SUV.  All new X5 models come with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard, can talk to your smartphone wirelessly and will keep it charged wirelessly the whole day long!  The digital dash display dominates the driving environment and the iDrive system provides internet software upgrades.  The integrated navigation system gets you pointing in the right direction the whole time, and there is even an electric glass roof that you can wind back to hear the wonderful wildlife when you go a bit wild and off the beaten track to explore.

The new dash is awesome, and I reckon its design is one of the best in the large luxury SUV segment.  The infotainment display cracks through the functions quickly and the clarity is first rate.  You can have an array of different materials and trim inserts throughout the interior, including the sexy carbon fibre inlays, and I just love the quilted leather panelling on the doors and seats!  2021 BMW X5 M drivers get a cracking sports digital driver’s display with many different modes, styles and colour functions.  The iDrive controller has only gotten better, and it’s so good that you don’t want any other type of infotainment switch or controlling feature.  This is the best.

Practicality in an X5 has always been a great selling point, and with an X5 M model you get masses of performance along with colossal load carrying and passenger hauling ability.  Boot space in the X5M Competition is 650 litres with the rear seats up and in place.  The rear bench splits 40:20:40, which is great for passing long luggage items up between the two rear passengers with just the centre section folded.

When you are spending money north of $200k there are some other fabulous luxury SUVs available (e.g., Range Rover P575 SVR, Audi Q8 RS, Porsche Cayenne GTS), however I reckon I’ve found my favourite, for now!  Buy a new BMW X5M Competition and you will enjoy a 3 years/unlimited km warranty with 3 years of roadside assistance.
