2019 BMW X7

2019 BMW X7

Now here’s a machine that a couple of decades ago I never thought BMW would seriously consider providing its fans with.  But, nevertheless we now have a flagship luxury BMW SUV known as the BMW X7.  Huge and daring, the 2019 BMW X7 rules the road with its Range Rover-like opulence and massive size.

The brand new X7 is a flavour of BMW that offers full-size 7-seat luxury in much the same way as Denny’s Diner offers oversize meals.  Big is sometimes good, and in BMW’s case this large SUV machine gets along quickly, and doesn’t act overweight.  From the pavement the X7 has massive dimensions that have been cleverly proportioned to give an athletic trace to the SUV lines.  Lots of exterior chrome and very classy 20-spoke alloys make the overall X7 appearance look very sophisticated.  Catch a glimpse of the BMW X7’s kidney grille and I would think it’s the largest we’ve ever seen on a BMW to date.

Creased panelling down the sides helps to trim the X7’s proportions down visually, as do the huge 20-inch alloys (22-inch on M Sport models).  Also the tall roofline makes the bonnet line look low and aggressive.  At the back of the new BMW X7, considering the size of the machine, it has to be one of the tidiest finishes to a large SUV that I’ve seen.  A lovely chrome trim bar connects both LED taillights, and down low are massive twin exhaust outlets which help keep the X7’s proportions looking muscly and athletic.

New BMW X7 SUVs have three initial engines in the line-up.  Base model BMW X7 SUVs start with the 30d.  The xDrive 40i petrol is the mid-range model.  And then the M50d is the high performance model.  All three engines are 6-cylinder units, the 40i being the only petrol model.  Power outputs are: 198 kW for the 30d (0-100 km/h in around seven seconds), 254 kW for the 40i (0-100 km/h in around 6.5 seconds), 298 kW/760 Nm M50d (0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds).  All X7 SUVs are AWD, but most of the time power is sent to the back wheels to give that ever-loved sporty BMW driving experience.  This also helps to boost fuel consumption figures.  Both diesel engines are remarkably efficient considering the massive body that they have to shift.  In length the new BMW X7 is well over 5.0 metres long, over 1.8 metres tall and exactly 2.0 metres wide.

Is it any good off-road?  The simple answer is yes.  The air suspension raises an extra 40 mm at the switch of a button, and there is plenty of clever braking and traction control antics to get you through the mud with little hassle.  You can opt for the off-road package which includes tough underbody cladding and an uprated driveline that has a selection of off-roading modes to choose from.  Hill Descent Control makes things simple for tackling those hairy downhill sections.

At the top of the range is the BMW X7 M50d, and with this you get the full size 22-inch alloys, M Sport differential and even a Harman Kardon audio system.  There is a Professionals Pack where the X7 is heavily techno fitted – so much so that the new X7 can pretty much drive itself!  However, even base models get the Merino leather interior with a full leather dashboard with accentuated stitching, premium inserts with breath-taking style, and a full leather interior with heated electronic memory seats front and rear.  Air suspension, and soft-close doors add to the X7’s plushness, and it really sets new standards.  BMW seeks to topple Range Rover off the top luxury SUV shelf.  They do a magnificent job, with the gorgeous leather, selection of rare wood inserts and modern trimmings making quite a splash.  All models also get the huge panoramic glass roof with three separate panes of glass that slide individually according to preference and temperature.  The Panoramic Roof Sky Lounge option has a roof that mimics an array (15,000 graphic patterns) of sky landscapes with LED lighting.  Oh-so nice and very Rolls Royce, this package is a pretty, pricey option.

A 10-speaker stereo is standard, while a 16-speaker premium sound is available as a middle option.  The top audio package is the Bowers and Wilkons full noise at 20 speakers and 1500 W!  The optional Rear-Seat Entertainment Professional system comprises a pair of 10.2-inch full-HD touchscreen displays, a Blu-ray-compatible DVD player, two USB ports, HDMI sockets and two headphone jacks.  The third row of seats has access to two further USB ports.

Sporty styling is owned by the M Sport packaging, where the new BMW X7s get a nice body kit, uprated brakes, and M Sport interior touches for even more exclusivity.

Passengers will get nothing short of premium luxury and space.  Passengers’ number six and seven can easily get into the third row seats as the rear doors are larger than the front doors.  All rear seats are folded electrically.  You can also consider a six-seater version that offers ‘Captain’s’ chairs in the rear that offer similar room and comfort to front seat occupants.  Fold all the rear seats down and the X7 has a humongous 2120-litre luggage capacity.  Even with the third row seats in place the new X7 has over 326 litres available to put all your shopping into.

BMW’s latest iDrive 7.0 infotainment system is a gem.  Both the massive central touchscreen and driver’s instrument panel graphics are brilliant.  The system can be controlled via the touch screen, voice control or the iDrive dial on the centre console.  BMW has fitted a four-zone automatic climate control as standard and additional air vents for the third row of seats help keep the X7 feeling fresh and temperate.  There is also an interior lighting system which has six different colour options which can also change colour when the door is open or when a call coming into the communications system.  Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard features.

Breath-taking BMW brilliance in the form of the big, brazen X7 that boasts the best space and quality in any German carmaker’s SUV line-up to date.
