2018 BMW 8-Series Coupe

BMW 8-Series Coupe

A nice relaxed evening consists of a few nice things.  I would suggest romance would have to be the icing on the cake, so maybe it the evening kicks off with a walk along the beach hand-in-hand.  You could both watch the sun set over the ocean on a balmy summer’s night.  Next, a skip up the steps together onto the boulevard where you find your new BMW 8 Series Coupe which welcomes the romantic couple with keyless recognition and entry.  As the stars become more defined in the twilight sky you pull up to park outside the Wildflower restaurant in Perth.  The new 8 series coupe can park itself but the front sensors are all you need this time to slip into a tight lot.  Taking her hand, you set about enjoying the night out with fine wines and delicious food.  After the meal, the new 8-series BMW selects your motel destination on the other side of town, and all you have to do is follow the car’s directions.  Heading into your motel room, you both smile at each other – and the best is yet to come.

The simple and precious things in life are the best, aren’t they?  Enjoying the finest, if your budget can extend to it, means that your drive will also be elegant, luxurious and powerful.  Your car might be a Bentley Continental or quick Aston Martin Vanquish.  Or maybe the angular Lexus LC500 might do it for you.  But then there is, of course the sexy Mercedes Benz S-Class Coupe or Jag’s F-Type that might get your ticker rate ticking faster.  However, it could just be that the latest flagship BMW sensation: -the all new BMW 8 Series Coupe – might be the new luxury Coupe that you’re going to want to be seen in!

As a grand Coupe, the all new four-seater sports car from BMW is the new flagship for Beemer fans.  Looks alone are breath-taking and beautiful.  It’s not hard to be won over by the 8-Series Coupe lines and shape – the lengthy 8-series appearance definitely makes a clear design statement.  The jaw-dropping good looks start with the characteristic large Beemer kidney grille that is now extra wide.  This gives an imposing look.  Sleek, narrow headlights house optional laser lights that can pierce the dark by up to 600 metres.  A huge, big front air dam is broad and low, while the massive air intakes shout massive performance.  Side-on, however, the long, low-profile silhouette is muscular and racy.  Delightful poise and balance flows through the sexy lines which finish at the 8-series tail with nice wide haunches, a rear diffuser, slim LED tail lights and humongous twin exhausts.  Picture perfect!

BMW 8-Series Coupe

Two engines are offered for powering the new AWD 8-Series Coupe.  One is a 395 kW, 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine found in the BMW M850i.  This engine is a slightly detuned version of what you find in the latest M5 – and you know how well that car gets along!  BMW claim the new M850i can run through the 0-100 km/h dash in less than 4 seconds – easily.  The other is the BMW 840d which has the diesel’s combination of performance and fuel economy.  In turbo-diesel guise, the 0-100 km/h sprint can be completed in less than five seconds, while the average fuel consumption, BMW claim, is a smidgeon over 5 litres/100 km.  I know which engine I’d sway towards, but I’ll leave you to make your mind up.

2018 BMW 8-Series Coupe Luxury

Enter inside the new 8-Series Coupe, and the cabin is impeccably stylish, beautifully crafted and gorgeously sumptuous.  Slip into the sport leather seats, and the wide centre console and tall transmission tunnel cocoons you snugly behind the steering wheel, making it feel very sporty.  Accented leather stitching binds the soft Merino leather seats, and the same quality leather is also used to cover the insides of the doors and the dashboard.  What you have is one very sumptuous GT where the comfort is excellent and the long-distance potential superb.

BMW 8-Series Coupe Luggage Capacity

Boasting all the very best technological features, you’ll find the flagship BMW is extremely well equipped – even in standard form.  There are optional upgrades should you want more.  The central infotainment display has a touchscreen that is 10.25-inches across.  You can control the infotainment system using voice commands, gesture controls or just simply directly touch the screen to control the features.  You also get a familiar BMW iDrive controller that’s located between the two front seats on the centre console.  Head-Up Display is standard, while BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional infotainment system includes the multi-function 12.3-inch digital instrument display that replaces the conventional instrument binnacle – very stylish!

Safety features are comprehensive with automatic cruise control matching the speed of the car in front before returning to a preselected cruising speed when the way is clear ahead again.  A camera in the windscreen is ready for detecting any hint of a potential collision, which if there is one of these moments the car will instantly apply automatic emergency braking – that includes pedestrians, animals and cyclists.  The BMW Personal Co-Pilot feature allows the new 8-Series Coupe to drive itself autonomously – but in order for the car to do this the driver’s hands must remain on the steering wheel.

On the road, the car rides wonderfully and remains dynamic for fast driving.  Whichever model you choose, the BMW 8 Series comes fitted with an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard.  This transmission is so smooth and quiet at any speed, and when you want to do it manually you can flick through the gears manually with ease.  An impressive techie feature is that the gearbox is also linked to the car’s satellite-navigation system, so it will actually change down through the gears to aid braking as you approach a road junction – pretty cool!

Lightweight magnesium and CFRP (Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic) also feature in the car’s construction and the roof and other parts of the body can also be constructed from CFRP at extra cost.  Using these incredible materials makes the BMW 8-Series light for its size.  Also clever is the four-wheel steering which not only enhances the coupe’s handling prowess but it also tightens the car’s turning circle when space is a premium in city streets.  You wouldn’t think that the car was so manoeuvrable, but it is.

What we have is one of the nicest and classiest new Coupes on the road – without a doubt – and probably my favourite for 2018.  The BMW 8-Series Coupe is the new benchmark GT Coupe, and it’s one to thoroughly enjoy and appreciate.
