2022 Audi RS7 Sportback

2022 Audi RS7 Sportback

Sleek looks with low profile lines set the new Audi RS7 Sportback off perfectly.  It offers a beautiful exterior with awesome road presence.  Owning a car like this isn’t always about status, but the 2022 RS7 Sportback does look superb in highfalutin company.  It also delivers a glorious sound and an exciting drive to match.  This is a very fast car that borders on being contemporary-supercar quick, boasts an exquisitely crafted interior, and has excellent practicality.  Let’s take a closer look.

If you must ask the question: “How much sir?”, then the Audi RS7 Sportback is probably going to be beyond your budget.  A new one of these is going to set you back north of $250k.  Add a few expensive optional extras, and over $300k is on the cards.  It is after all a German masterpiece of fine engineering, design, and skill.

The car goes hard out, shoulder to shoulder, with cars like the Mercedes Benz AMG GT 4-door, BMW M8, and Porsche Panamera.  It’s a stealthy machine and I know looks can be quite subjective, but I do think this new RS7 has quite the perfect blend of elegance and athleticism.  Just look at those massive exhaust tips, which are the largest fitted to any Audi RS model.  And what about those sexy 21- or 22-inch alloy wheels and bulging wheel arches.

All of that RS7 eye candy still has a balance of practicality in its design.  The Audi RS7 boot, for example, has 535 litres to fill when the rear seats are up, which is enough for a decent size golf bag or luggage for the weekend getaway.  By comparison, the BMW M8 has 440 litres, the Panamera 495 litres, and the AMG GT just 456 litres.

Inside the Audi’s gorgeous interior, you’ll find that, surprise–surprise, it is very similar to the standard A7 versions, but it does have RS7 treatment all to itself, which you’ll note by the special, more supportive, RS-branded seats with electric adjustment to help drivers, of almost any size, get nice and comfortable behind the steering wheel.  A flat-bottomed steering wheel and aluminium gearshift paddles add to the differentiation.  RS logos are scattered throughout the cabin and on the floor mats.  Dial in some power to the digital driver’s display, and you’ll also have bragging rights to the RS-specific A7 dials that you’ll find on its Virtual Cockpit display.

New luxury Audis all boast ambient interior lighting functions, but with the RS7 Sportback standard kit list, it is very extensive; so things like multi zone climate control, a premium sound system with digital radio and android auto/Apple CarPlay, a digital driver’s display, a heads-up digital display, an integrated navigation system, wireless smartphone charging with smartphone charging cables, and an electric sunroof kick things off all rather nicely.  The RS7’s infotainment screen is crisp and dead easy to use, even when customising it by using the buttons on the steering wheel.

I’ve already noted that the 2022 Audi RS7 Sportback offers the best boot space in this class of car, which I guess we’d have to say is the Luxury Sports GT Class.  But what about for the passengers in the back seats?  They should be impressed with the comfort of the seats and the plenty available knee room, though for the tallest timber the headroom might be a little tight.  You can also swap the RS7 Sportback’s standard 2-seat configuration for a 3-seater – a handy option if you have a family.  The split folding rear seats also deliver versatility to Audi’s quick RS7 Sportback GT.

Now for the drive!  You enter the low slung Audi RS7 Sportback with keyless entry, slip inside its gorgeous leather interior, take a deep breath, and fire up the engine via the starter button.  What a sound of bliss!  The 2022 Audi RS7 Sportback comes with a twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine that produces 441 kW, and it burbles magnificently.  This whopping power is sent through a silky smooth 8-speed automatic gearbox and splits to all four wheels in true Audi quattro 4WD fashion.  AWD traction and a clever launch control system enables the Audi RS7 Sportback to crack 100 km/h from a standstill in just 3.6 seconds.  100–200 km/h takes around 8 seconds.  That’s fast!  In standard guise, the Audi RS7 Sportback is limited to 250 km/h, but you can pay for various performance packs that provide software adjustments to bump top speed out to 280 km/h and then again, with some more cash, to 305 km/h.  As you might imagine, the active cruise control is a feature you’ll need to get well acquainted with when driving this rocket around Australia.

Head into the inner city zones, and the car’s assisted self-parking system makes popping this sizeable GT into a shopping park effortless.  Bumpy streets?  No problem: the RS7 comes standard with adaptive air suspension – definitely another feature that I really like about it – making it supremely comfortable when it matters most.  Obviously, this adaptive air suspension also allows you to stiffen everything up for carving up the track or the quiet backroads, and with Quattro underpinnings and four-wheel-steering (optional) this is an immensely rapid and thrilling car to drive.  When night falls, you can be wowed with the performance of the stunning laser LED headlamps which brighten up a dark road in whitened brilliance.  Automatic high beam ensures that oncoming drivers won’t be dazzled.

The new RS7 Sportback is also packed with safety features.  Things like autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind spot sensors and automated self-parking are just some of the features of this top end, high-performance luxury GT hatchback.

I just love the car.  It is good looking, has a gorgeous interior, is phenomenally quick, and then boasts a bigger boot than any of its alternative drives.  What more could you want of a car like this?
