2019 Ssangyong Tivoli

2019 Ssangyong Tivoli

Another Korean beauty, the stylish 2019 Ssangyong Tivoli is all ready to take on the compact SUV market.  With its strong looks featuring a good looking nose with dynamic air intakes and body lines that flow elegantly down each side of the Tivoli, this is a car that you’ll enjoy driving.  Sitting on 18-inch diamond cut wheels (optional over the standard 16-inch alloys) and boasting LED lights in the front and rear all add to the sophisticated design that makes the new Tivoli look superb.

The vehicle that I think looks similarly stylish, as well as being a direct competitor to the new Tivoli, is the latest Suzuki Vitara.  These two vehicles compete head-to-head for compact SUV honours.  It’s hard to look passed the Ssangyong Tivoli price tag which is really competitive but brings with it heaps of modern technology and two excellent engines.

Slip inside the Ssangyong Tivoli’s cabin and there is a high level of detail along with eye-catching design.  Ssangyong uses a wide array of materials and textures to keep the dash interesting and modern.  Touches of shiny silver plastics define key items like the centre console, the gear lever shelf, steering wheel mounted controls, air vents and door handles.  A really nicely designed steering wheel is suitably chunky and strengthens the pleasant Tivoli driving experience.  Raising the bar, the 2019 Tivoli cabin is suitably modern and exciting, along with being comfortable and roomy, even for the active small family.

As a five-seater, the new Ssangyong Tivoli is extremely practical and makes life easy for the busy lifestyle.  Offering a spacious 423 litres of cargo carrying ability with the rear seats in place, there is ample space for accommodating three golf bags or all your shopping.  The second row of seats can also be folded completely flat to allow the Tivoli to accommodate a massive amount of luggage should you require.  The second row has 60:40 split folding practicality.  Numerous storage spaces around the interior give plenty of options for people to store a variety of items.  A centre console is large enough to carry a tablet, and the glove box is big and has shelves.  The side pockets on all four doors can hold a 1.5-litre bottle; so fluid refreshment for longer journeys is possible.  Map pockets and a sunglasses holder for the driver are present.  As far as seat comfort goes the Tivoli scores well in this department.  There is good leg and head room, and even the rear seats can recline.  The rear seat passenger seated in the middle will appreciate the absence of a drive train tunnel, making their comfort levels that much better on longer trips.

If you would like even bigger load carrying ability, Ssangyong provides the Tivoli XLV which offers a stretched luggage compartment, and this might just be the one that ticks all the boxes for you – so do take a look!

Ssangyong’s new Tivoli carries on the good safety work that the previous model started.  The 2019 Tivoli is built to a particularly high level of strength and safety, with 71.4% of the body construction consisting of high-strength steel and 40% advanced high-strength steel.  In order to minimise collision impact, ten key areas of the vehicle have been reinforced with hot-formed steel, which increases the steel’s impact resistance to 1500 Mpa, as opposed to just 280 Mpa for plain steel.  Front, side and curtain airbags along with seat belt pre-tensioners, autonomous braking, adaptive cruise control, ABS and ESC are just some of the safety features that make up the new Tivoli package.  And, actually from 2013 the Tivoli has been a very safe compact SUV; the latest model being even better.  KNCAP testing gives the Tivoli top marks.

So, under the bonnet of the new Tivoli Petrol lies a peppy 1.6-litre petrol motor that delivers 95 kW at 6000 rpm, while pulling power tops out at 160 Nm at 4600 rpm.  There are options for connecting the power to the 2WD system; so you can choose between the six-speed manual gearbox and the six-speed automatic gearbox.  The manual is slightly more frugal, keeping its average fuel consumption under 7 litres/100 km.  In automatic form the Tivoli can run onto 175 km/h, so for running between wickets the Tivoli is fairly long-legged and relaxed at open road speed limits.  It also has the flexibility of sourcing extra power for accelerating passed slower traffic when the need arises.  The manual petrol Tivoli can run passed 180 km/h and can happily flick through the gears for a sportier driving manner.

There is also the 1.6-litre Turbo Diesel engine that is my personal favourite.  Loads of torque (300 Nm between 1500-and-2500 rpm) makes this the perfect compact AWD SUV tourer.  The Tivoli diesel eats up the miles with ease, even fully loaded, and can be mated to the manual or automatic option.  Of course, the added bonus of owning the diesel model is that not only do you get plenty of torque but you also get excellent fuel economy – a combined fuel consumption of around 5 litres/100 km for either the automatic or manual version.  You can also get the diesel Tivoli in 2WD.

On the road, the new Tivoli feels well-planted and it soaks up the bumps very well.  Of course, the AWD model is attractive especially if gravel roads or slippery road surfaces are commonly part of your driving route.

One of the great things about buying a new Ssangyong is that Ssangyong’s vehicles are extremely well equipped.  The Tivoli comes with a 7-inch infotainment/multimedia system, USB and AUX ports, dual-zone air-conditioning, leather seats, a front camera, rain sensors, auto headlamp control, smart key, push button start, cargo bay space dividers, active AWD with a lock mode, driver modes, roof rails, a powered driver’s seat, heated front seats, privacy glass, leather trim and seating, mood lighting, Bluetooth hands-free phone connections, a six-speaker audio system, 12V power outlets, an electronic tailgate, lane keeping assist, traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, hill descent control, hill start assist, and loads of individual choices to make your own Tivoli especially yours both with interior options and exterior colours.  In other words, one nice wee SUV.

The all new Ssangyong Tivoli – you’ll love it!
