Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

A popular new return to the SUV contest is the innovative Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.  Looking very modern and stylish, the Pajero Sport provides a distinctive alternative to the Hyundai Santa Fe, Toyota Highlander or even Kluger.  With five seats and a cavernous luggage area, Mitsubishi has a 4WD winner.

Diesel power is the way forward for the smooth eight-speed automatic Pajero Sport.  And the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel is a great performer with 430 Nm available from 2500 rpm.  There is also 133 kW at a very low 3500 rpm.  It’s this power that makes the Pajero Sport feel very grunty through the mid-range.  Open road performance is effortless and easy.  Compared with the recent 2.8-litre Hilux model at 130 kW and 450 Nm, the equivalent Pajero Sport feels an equally strong performer.

Fuel consumption always varies according to the level asked of the motor; however, the Pajero Sport should easily provide around 9 litres/100 km, and in many cases lower.  This is pretty good amongst the competition.  Everyday fuel consumption figures more often always appear heavier than that of the specified figures given from manufacturers – but that’s another topic.  The aerodynamic shape of the Pajero Sport also gives a quiet ride at high speed.

Handling on the road is remarkably grippy and well-weighted.  Loaded up with luggage and a full presence of occupants on-board, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is a great wagon.  Perfect for the family, the rear-seat space is good, and all the on-board technology will provide a relaxed and entertained drive for all occasions.  Replacing the Triton’s leaf-sprung rear with a coil-spring set up, the Pajero Sport has a comfortable and polished ride.

One thing that you can be sure of is the off-road capability is always good in a Pajero.  The low-range 4WD gearbox has loads of ability for when the tracks become very tough terrain.  I can see the Pajero Sport being a popular wagon for the Outback excursions, and let’s face it; there are loads of places to explore in Australia. As well as being based on the same ladder chassis platform as the Triton ute, the Pajero Sport has all the latest off-road technology.  In other words, the new Mitsubishi Sport is as awesome off the road as it is on it.  In the centre of the console sits the “off-road mode” dial.  The driver can select from four different off-road modes including gravel, mud/snow, sand and rock.  The 4WD system optimises traction parameters for wheel spin, transmission, brake force and engine power and control.  All models come with hill descent control as a standard feature.

Staring the ball rolling is the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport GLX, and this model comes standard with daytime running lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and start, climate control, privacy glass, cruise control, rear parking sensors and Mitsubishi’s new Smartphone Link Display Audio system.  This awesome sound is controlled via the clear and easy-to-use 7-inch touchscreen and boasts Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.  The GLS model adds dual-zone air conditioning, rain sensing wipers, leather seats, power front seats and a six-speaker sound.

Opt for the flagship, and the Pajero Sport Exceed is a phenomenally nice drive.  18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, an ultrasonic mis-acceleration prevention system, Daytime Running Lights and taillights, leather upholstery, a reversing camera, electrically adjustable and heated front seats, a premium eight-speaker audio system, forward collision mitigation, blind spot warning, automatic headlights and rain sensing wipers.

Mitsubishi continues its six-year run of sales growth and with models as good as the new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport it’s easy to see why.

The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport model series includes the:

  • Pajero Sport GLX
  • Pajero Sport GLS
  • Pajero Sport Exceed
