BMW 528i

bmw-528i

Take a smooth BMW design and make it smoother. Take a grunty BMW straight-six engine and up the output. Drive the BMW 528i and your driving experience just got better. It’s been a while since BMW has offered the 528i as a model contender in the medium-to-large-sized car echelon, and it’s back with better looks and even more power.

I love the new BMW 5 Series looks. They are sharper and trimmer. The car’s lines don’t look overweight, and they make a nice affirmation to what lies in waiting underneath the low-slung bonnet. Shod with some nice V-spoked alloys, the BMW 528i picture is perfect. There are some genuine BMW accessories that look gorgeous on any of the new 5 Series bodies. I love the rear white lights package, the 20-inch V-spoke light alloys, the carbon rear boot spoiler and the exterior wing mirrors capped in chrome. Some of you may opt for the blackened kidney grille, but it doesn’t do it for me.

Slip inside the BMW 528i, and that familiar BMW-ness comes to the fore. Everything about the BMW 528i cockpit is about perfect placement and an eye for the detailing. BMW has used a very clean, smooth dashboard design that looks thinner and classier than that used in previous BMW 5 Series models. Wood veneers and leather add to the cars luxury appeal, while the speedometer dial and rev counter are simple and clear to read with the familiar white-on-black numerals. You could be forgiven thinking that you are stepping up to the BMW 528i and down to the 520 models because it is a bit like that. There is a very definite lift in equipment levels and luxury trims. Electronic componentry adds, to the BMW 528i, things like the professional navigation system with a 10.2-inch screen, a full colour head-up display, and internet connection when the car is stationary. You’ll enjoy the beautifully comfortable seats in the 528i. The front seats are electronically adjustable and boast a memory function that links the driver’s seat with the mirrors and steering column position. Bi-Xenon headlights with LED rings and a full headlight wash system are standard items on the BMW 528i.

You’ll have entertainment within the BMW 528i. USB audio interface combines with the six-speaker system to create pristine sound with funky bass. Satellite navigation and an onboard computer keeps you well informed of your direction and progress. Cup-holders and armrests make travel refined, while the legroom and head room is very good. The hot rays from the sun can be kept at bay with the clever heat/sun protection glazing used in all BMW 5 Series cars. The two-zone automatic air-conditioning system works superbly to give the BMW 528i occupants a relaxed and comfortable drive whatever the outside temperatures might be.

Even the best drivers will enjoy some of the driver aids offered by BMW. Cruise control, head-up display and park-distance control makes for safe travel. Top results in the Australian and European crash tests ensure that you are driving in one of the safest cars. The BMW 528i has a comprehensive safety list that boasts an active protection system, air bags, dynamic stability control, three-point seatbelts and a very strong safety shell.

Nimble handling and superior brakes give the BMW 528i the big thumbs up for driving enthusiasts. The power under the bonnet boasts 190 kW, and this muscle comes from a six-cylinder engine that uses Alusil cylinders and a magnesium crankcase. It is one of the lightest six-cylinder engines in its class, which helps with the car’s handling and fuel consumption. An average fuel consumption of around 8.0 litres/100 km is pretty good, given you’ll be enjoying the cars quick acceleration and effortless high speeds. The twin-scroll turbo-charging is right ready to produce peak power right down low in the 528i’s engine revs. Power is put through a very nice eight-speed automatic transmission that has the Steptronic feature. The result is a magnificently swift and quiet drive.
