{"id":391,"date":"2010-08-23T09:14:56","date_gmt":"2010-08-22T23:14:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.privatefleet.com.au\/?p=391"},"modified":"2020-06-20T02:03:31","modified_gmt":"2020-06-19T16:03:31","slug":"automotive-myth-busters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.privatefleet.com.au\/blog\/home\/automotive-myth-busters\/","title":{"rendered":"Automotive Myth Busters!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Perhaps you&#8217;ve just taken part in our interactive myth-busting quiz?\u00a0 If so, how did you do?\u00a0 If you haven&#8217;t yet, <strong>STOP<\/strong>, don&#8217;t\u00a0ready any further \u00a0&#8211; take part in the MythBuster Quiz and then come back to this page for the breakdown.<\/p>\n<p> Let&#8217;s run through the questions and answers below along with some often surprising background to the results.\u00a0 We&#8217;d also love to hear some of your automotive myths so please let us know in the comments section below!<\/p>\n<p> 1.\u00a0 The very first car that Soichiro Honda made was powered by a huge 8 litre engine. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">TRUE<\/span>!\u00a0 <em>Soichiro Honda built his first car, a \u201cCurtiss\u201d fitted with an 8 litre aero engine.\u00a0 It still exists and is displayed in the Honda Museum.<\/em><\/p>\n<p> 2.\u00a0 Holden does not sell its cars in Zanzibar as Holden in Swahili\u00a0sounds like the\u00a0word for\u00a0\u2018underpants\u2019. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">FALSE<\/span>!\u00a0 <em>But if anyone does know what Holden means in Swahili we\u2019d love to know.<\/em><\/p>\n<p> 3.\u00a0 You can be prosecuted for using a mobile phone whilst driving even if you were just changing your playlist. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">TRUE!<\/span> <em>The prosecution has to prove beyond reasonable doubt that you were actually using the phone and not just holding it.\u00a0 \u2018Using\u2019 includes using the phone for any of its functions, not just making a phone call.<\/em><\/p>\n<p> 4.\u00a0 In 2008, a South Australian cop recorded a car speeding at 400kph only to discover his gun had locked onto a military jet. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">FALSE<\/span>!\u00a0 <em>See answer to Q 10.<\/em><\/p>\n<p> 5.\u00a0 Sucking on a copper coin can beat the breathalyser. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">FALSE<\/span>!<\/p>\n<p> 6.\u00a0 Hybrid-electric cars must be charged at night. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">FALSE<\/span>!\u00a0 <em>Hybrid cars have batteries and a conventional motor.\u00a0 Fully electric cars such as Mitsubishis iMiEV, however will need to be charged overnight.<\/em><\/p>\n<p> 7.\u00a0 Over-inflate your tyres for better fuel economy. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">TRUE!<\/span> <em>But it\u2019s not a good idea and it won\u2019t save you much in the long run. By over-inflating your tyres above the manufacturer\u2019s recommendations you will wear out your tyres much quicker, change your car\u2019s handling characteristics, and be subjected to a much harsher ride.<\/em><\/p>\n<p> 8.\u00a0 You can\u2019t get fined for driving too slowly. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">TRUE<\/span>!\u00a0 <em>You can get fined for driving too slow if the police consider you are a hindrance to other traffic or pedestrians.<\/em><\/p>\n<p> 9.\u00a0 Aluminium foil dipped in Coca Cola removes rust spots from chromework. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">TRUE<\/span>!\u00a0 <em>The NRMA\u2019s \u201cOpen Road\u201d conducted this test recently, and found, surprisingly that it did seem to work, thought this can be seen as somewhat irrelevant, considering the absence of chromework on modern cars.<\/em><\/p>\n<p> 10.\u00a0 You can outrun a speed camera. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">TRUE<\/span>!\u00a0 <em>Britain\u2019s iconic \u201cTop Gear\u201d motoring programme put it to the test and their test driver \u201cStig\u201d discovered that, at more than 171 mph (275 kph), the radar didn\u2019t register \u2026 now where can we test this?<\/em><\/p>\n<p> 11.
