Considering a study found that almost half of Aussies now own at least one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/animalmedicinesaustralia.org.au\/report\/pets-in-australia-a-national-survey-of-pets-and-people-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that\u2019s a lot of dogs in cars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, cars are built for the safety of humans, not pets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14366 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.privatefleet.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/restraining-dog-in-car-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"restraining dogs in cars\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if the car breaks and your dog isn\u2019t restrained properly, it could become a 20kg projectile. In fact, 5,000 dogs each year are either injured or killed as a result of jumping from a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspcaqld.org.au\/blog\/pet-care\/dog-restraints\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moving car<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most states it\u2019s illegal to drive with an animal on your lap, as they can distract you from driving. It\u2019s also against the law in Australia to carry a load that\u2019s not fastened, such as dogs on the back of a ute. So, what are the options for safely travelling with Bluey?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Safely restraining dogs in cars<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safely restraining your dog in the car depends on the size of your dog and the make of your car.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Dog seat belt or safety harness<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may already have a harness for your dog. Dog safety harnesses work by slipping over the dog\u2019s head, under the front legs and attaching to the back piece on the sides of its body. The anchor attaches the harness to the seat belt attachment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dog should be able to sit and lie down comfortably while wearing the safety harness in the car.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NRMA revealed that only two harnesses on the market passed their test, adequately restraining their crash test dummy dog. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.petshopdirect.com.au\/shop\/item\/petlife-roadie-dog-seatbelt-harness-medium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purina Roadie harness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com.au\/Sleepypod-CS-RED-M-Clickit-Sport\/dp\/B00PRESJMA?th=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepypod Clickit harness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> passed out of the 25 tested. That\u2019s because their webbing and buckles were stronger than the others.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Dog transport crates<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dog crates can be made of hard plastic, metal or fabric with supports. Make sure the crate is large enough for your dog to lie down, stand, turn around and stretch. Your dog may feel anxious in the crate, so adding its favourite toy may help. The crate needs to be fixed to the car using the seat belt. If you have a ute, bolting the crate to the tray may be the safest way to go.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Cargo barriers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Station wagons and 4WD vehicles can get custom-made steel mesh bolted to the rear seat floor and up to the car&#8217;s ceiling, sectioning off the space behind the seats. This provides a separate section in the vehicle for your luggage or pet.
