{"id":1027,"date":"2011-07-11T14:35:13","date_gmt":"2011-07-11T04:35:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.privatefleet.com.au\/?p=1027"},"modified":"2020-06-20T01:54:28","modified_gmt":"2020-06-19T15:54:28","slug":"time-to-plug-in-the-bus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.privatefleet.com.au\/blog\/home\/time-to-plug-in-the-bus\/","title":{"rendered":"Time to plug in the bus."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s great to see Sydney on the ball with<br \/>\noffering Australia&#8217;s first public on-street electric vehicle charging station<br \/>\nin Derby Place, Glebe.\u00a0 What a great<br \/>\nadvancement.\u00a0 And I\u2019m sure that this will<br \/>\nbe the first of many you\u2019ll find around Australia in years to come.\u00a0 The idea of cheap transport and no emissions<br \/>\nhas to be a good one.\u00a0 Any new car buyers<br \/>\nin Sydney now have an opportunity to look at making use of this charging<br \/>\nstation.\u00a0 One way of doing this might be<br \/>\nby buying a new electric powered vehicle or hybrid.\u00a0 Certainly, the electric cars are becoming more<br \/>\npopulous amongst the new car lists at the back of good car mags. \u00a0We really are entering a whole new world of<br \/>\ntransportation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.privatefleet.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/charge-station.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1028\" title=\"charge station\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.privatefleet.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/charge-station-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the topic of electric transportation,<br \/>\nelectric trains and electric buses have been around for a little while now, and<br \/>\nI notice that General Motors has found a viable option for plug-in public<br \/>\ntransport buses.\u00a0 Investments into this<br \/>\nform of electric transport have already been made \u2013 approximately $30 million<br \/>\nUS.\u00a0 The EcoRide BE-35 battery electric bus,<br \/>\nmade by Proterra, needs as little as 10 minutes to charge.\u00a0 I wish my AAA battery recharger was as<br \/>\nefficient as this!\u00a0 With a 65-kilometre<br \/>\nrange for the fast charge option, this is a bus that could easily replace<br \/>\ndiesel powered buses for any typical transit and shuttle services around a city.<\/p>\n<p>The bonus of running public electric transport<br \/>\nand private electric transport, particularly in a city environment, is that would<br \/>\nbe a very big reduction in smog, greenhouse gas pollution, congestion and noise<br \/>\ninside the city boundaries.\u00a0 As long as<br \/>\nthe production of the electricity at the primary stage is clean, then we\u2019re in<br \/>\na win-win situation.\u00a0 It\u2019s not so cool if<br \/>\nthe production of the electricity for running the electric vehicles has been<br \/>\nperformed by employing belching coal stations or nuclear reactors!\u00a0 If this was the case, then the electric form<br \/>\nof transport isn\u2019t so clean &#8211; and definitely not such a hot trend, after<br \/>\nall.<\/p>\n<p>A greater demand for electricity would<br \/>\ncreate greater emissions from a coal powered station.\u00a0 If your source of power is coming from<br \/>\nhydro-power stations or wind or solar energy, then the greater demand for<br \/>\nelectricity has nil effect on the environment &#8211; in fact, it would be better<br \/>\nbecause you\u2019re reducing emissions into the atmosphere by taking the petrol and<br \/>\ndiesel powered options off the road as people turn to electric vehicles for<br \/>\ngetting from A to B.<\/p>\n<p>With Sydney now getting in on the<br \/>\ncharging stations, they have joined other cities such as Amsterdam, San<br \/>\nFrancisco, Philadelphia, Detroit, Houston, Vancouver and London who have<br \/>\ninstalled a charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Do you think it\u2019s timely to buy an<br \/>\nelectric vehicle, yet?\u00a0 Or do you think<br \/>\nwe should hold fire and see if time will tell whether electricity will continue<br \/>\nto be a feasible means of clean green transport?
