While all of the Mitsubishi Lancer range are well worth a look – and we’ve got them reviewed elsewhere on this site if you want to have a closer look – the Mitsubishi Lancer VRX has plenty to make it stand out from the rest. Maybe it’s not as sport-oriented as the Ralliart version of the Lancer, but the Mitsubishi Lancer VRX is just a touch below this, with plenty of its own features that drivers (and passengers) will just love.

Let’s start with what’s under the bonnet of the Mitsubishi Lancer VRX. The VRX has a larger engine than the other non-Ralliart Colts: a 2.4 litre DOHC 16 valve MIVEC with a generous amount of torque (226 Nm at 4100 revs) and power (125 kW at 6000 rmp) that will keep most drivers more than happy with the Mitsubishi Lancer VRX’s performance. This power is accessed either through the five-speed manual transmission or through the six-speed CVT automatic transmission – which you can adjust at your pleasure with the paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel.

The Mitsubishi Lancer VRX, like other Lancers, comes in two body styles, the sportback (that’s a hatchback in normal automotive terms) and the sedan version. And you really would be hard put to choose between the two, as they both look great and have similar styling and features (alloy trimmed interior, climate control with pollen filter, power windows and so forth). I guess it would come down to how many doors you want – if you’ve got passengers to drop off, four doors are miles more convenient – and how much you want to pay. The sportback has the ability to lower the floor to increase the luggage space – which is generous to start with – so this may give it the advantage over the saloon variant.

Now, if you are interested in purchasing a vehicle that’s at the top of its model range or very close to it, you expect plenty of bells and whistles, and the last thing you want is for safety to be compromised. And the Mitsubishi Lancer VRX won’t disappoint you on this front, if it disappoints you at all. A feature that will be popular with many drivers is the LCD multi-information in the display that lets you know exactly how the Mitsubishi Lancer VRX is rolling. The audio system – which features an MP3 compatible input jack – can be controlled via the steering wheel, as can the cruise control. The Mitsubishi Lancer VRX also features the Smart Key entry system that gives you complete keyless control – it’ll even start the engine for you, if you want it. Other fun, handy items on the Mitsubishi Lancer VRX feature list include rain-sensing wipers and dusk-sensing headlamps.

On the safety front, the Mitsubishi Lancer V-RX is fitted with SRS airbags, including driver’s knee bag as standard (actually, Mitsubishi has fitted all the Lancer range with this feature); Mitsubishi combined this with the active safety features such as ABS brakes, Active Traction Control, Brake Assist, Active Stability Control and EBD, and the passive RISE bodyshell system. The Mitsi Lancer (all types, not just the VRX) has earned the full five stars in the ANCAP test.

Little touches setting the Mitsubishi Lancer VRX apart from its stablemates include a chrome exhaust at the tail, a rear spoiler and bright silver 18” ten-spoke wheels. But exterior features the Mitsubishi Lancer VRX shares with the other Lancers include the fog lamps, side skirts (a must on something with the Lancer’s sporting heritage) and a front spoiler. Overall, the Mitsubishi Lancer VRX looks very sleek and polished, ready to take anyone anywhere that the tarmac can reach.
