Mitsubishi Express

The Mitsubishi Express van is something of a gold standard in the world of commercial vehicles.

Model Update

For such a long time, Mitsubishi has offered the ever reliable Mitsubishi Express. The years have seen it progressively keep up with the times, and 2010 sees the Express available with a number of handy and practical features. Purpose built, the Express offers economic, reliable service for the small business and tradesperson.

A step rear bumper, central locking, a large passenger slide door, air conditioning, power steering, a tilt-adjustable steering column, reclining front bucket seats, a cargo protection bar and all manner of tie down points has to make the Mitsubishi Express one of the best priced practical vans that money can buy.

Power comes from the bullet-proof 2.4-litre petrol engine that boasts 88 kW of power at 5000 rpm. Leaf springs at the rear and a cargo space of up to 2.74 metres in length, 1.53 metres wide and 1.36 metres high give a load carrying ability that is hard to beat. Throw in Mitsubishi’s five-year/130,000 km warranty, and you edge out the competitors for Australia’s best priced, budget delivery van.

If a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. These sayings may have been in the back of the design team’s mind when they were creating the Mitsubishi Express.

Yes, the classic Mitsubishi Express van is back with improvements. Available in three models – SWB (short wheel base) panel van, SWB window van and the MWB (medium wheel base) – the Mitsubishi Express is ready to do the business and do it well. The Mitsubishi Express is pretty much the industry standard when it comes to commercial vehicles, and there would be few contractors or other commercial drivers needing vans that couldn’t, wouldn’t or haven’t chosen the Mitsubishi Express as a fleet vehicle. The colour choices – white or beige – are the perfect canvas for applying logos and phone numbers. Or for artwork, if you’re the type that likes to buy a good van and do it up with a bit of personality.

All Mitsubishi Express variants have a 2.4 litre engine that will keep both the drivers and the bean-counters in the company happy. This engine is capable of producing 84 kW of power at the 5000 rev level, and the 188 Nm of torque at 3000 revs is just one reason why Mitsubishi Expresses are often used as courier vehicles: quick acceleration to get important packages and documents from A to B in time.

OK, what’s the Mitsubishi Express got in terms of payload? Well, this depends on the model you choose. While both the SWB and MWB variants of the Mitsubishi Express can seat two, the SWB model packs away a payload of 1015 kg, while the MWB takes 1135 kg. The SWB Window van seats five, and has a payload of 945 kg. So take your pick. The Mitsubishi Express can also tow a fair bit – important for contracting crews with a trailer of equipment on the back – with trailer brakes, it can literally haul a ton: 1200 kg, in fact (600 kg without the trailer brakes). Cargo tie-downs are provided to keep everything in the cargo hold where it should be. And if you do want the seating capacity of the SWB Window Mitsubishi Express at times, but still need the extra space, the rear bench seat folds flat to get in those extra bits and pieces. The vinyl floor is tough and easy to clean.

If you’re driving home from a hard working day, you’ll appreciate a few comfort features, and the Mitsubishi Express has these as well as the capacity to carry what you need. Reclining bucket seats in the front are just the start: you can also enjoy the tilt adjustable steering wheel, the power steering (improves the handling no end), and the CD player.

The possibilities are endless with the Mitsubishi Express. It’s suitable for converting into a small camper or for taking wheelchair passengers as well as for everyday cargo-hauling.

The current model series includes the:

  • Mitsubishi Express SWB
  • Mitsubishi Express SWB Window
  • Mitsubishi Express MWB
