In Germany the autobahn freeway system does not feature any speed limit. There is a recommended speed of 130 km/h; however the temptation is always to see what your car can do. Driving at such high speed requires much from a vehicle, and this is why Mercedes Benz has sought to engineer their motor vehicles to cope with the rigours of high velocity motoring. One of the greatest weapons on the German autobahn, and indeed on any Australian road, is the new Mercedes Benz S600 LWB. Superbly comfortable to drive, and very quick, the S600 LWB has all the goods to travel the roads in complete style. The well equipped cabin has all the accessories that one needs to remain comfortable and happy on long journeys. Take the big Merc into the city streets, and you will look very much the part at the latest glitzy hotel, V8 Supercar meet or at the next boardroom meeting. Driving up to your in-laws in one of these stylish vehicles will certainly release any tensions.
Onboard, there are such delights as Calyptus wood trim, a very special COMAND system that controls the integrated radio, 8-inch colour display, DVD drive and a PCMCIA slot. The audio unit is MP3 compatible. Cruise control, front seats with lumbar support, full leather and THERMOTRONIC luxury automatic climate control are some of the best technological gadgets in the business.
What's under the hood? A very grunty 5.5 litre V12 engine leads the charge. You will enjoy the maximum of 380 kW at 5000 rpm, and the awesome 830 Nm of torque. Incidentally, the torque is available from as low as 1800 rpm and twists this hard right through to 3500 rpm. I’m afraid the HSV and FPV can’t cut the mustard up against this beast. With a limited top speed of 210 km/h, and awesome acceleration, you’ll be the first one to the boardroom meeting every time. The 0-100 km/h dash is performed in just 4.6 seconds. The car weighs over 2 tonnes. Isn't this is quite remarkable?
To look at the S600 has plenty of chrome, sleek driving lights, fat five-spoke alloys (although the choice of alloy design is yours) and one of the nicest teardrop styled exteriors around. At high speed, as you can imagine, the cabin is very silent, and you can hold a conversation without difficulty. As the Mercedes-Benz glides effortlessly along, you and your occupants can relax and sit back in the Merc’s smooth leather seats. Being a long wheel base version of the very fine S-Class, there is so much legroom that you will feel like you are seated inside a lavish lounge suite in a five star penthouse.
The current model series includes the:
