Model Update
There’s a lot to report back on for the Mercedes Benz B-Class. This is the cheapest model for any potential new-car buyer to make their way into the luxurious and desirable Mercedes Benz brand.
Freshly up-dated, the Mercedes Benz B-Class offers new engines, a new level of grip and control, and superb interior comfort and style.
What stands out in any Mercedes Benz, is the elegance with which each car is designed and put together. Enter any of the variants, and what hits you in the face is the impeccable build quality and craftsmanship. The very high level of workmanship is available in the smaller Mercedes Benz cars, just as it is found in the most luxurious Mercedes Benz model.
A Mercedes Benz offers high standards. And though you may not require the bigger room of the C-Class and E-Class models, you could do with the practicality and performance that a new, smaller Mercedes Benz B-Class provides.
Cast your eyes over the B-Class Merc, and the lines have a sporty appearance. Cleverly disguised into the exterior design package is a high roof-line that embodies plenty of space inside the B-Class cabin. Design, dynamism and practicality are some of the features that the B-Class delivers on all three counts. This is a premium car with remarkable engine power, exceptional ride comfort, and highly generous amounts of space. The flexibility in the load carrying department is remarkable. Considering all the Mercedes Benz B-Class obtains, it’s hard to believe that it’s captured in proportions which are a little over four metres in length.
Each of the Mercedes Benz B-Class cars are pleasing to drive. The way in which each B-Class model provides plenty of driving enjoyment combined with smooth operation and low fuel consumption means that this is an entertaining car that is both efficient and genuinely powerful. Three engines are available to the little Mercedes Benz. You have the choice of the B 180 with an 85 kW petrol engine. The B180 CDI offers diesel power, while the B 200 provides smooth, punchy petrol performance - with 100 kW on tap and a gutsy 185 Nm of torque available between 3500 rpm and 4000 rpm.
But we’ve only considered one side of the coin. Performance definitely provides driving enjoyment. But to boost driving satisfaction the performance needs to come as frugally as possible. Most people enjoy a sprightly drive combined with superior fuel economy, and with the Mercedes Benz B-Class you can flip the coin over, and you’ll find that the stylish Mercedes-Benz B-Class is thrifty, too. None of the three models consume fuel over 8 litres/100 km. Of course, the diesel B-Class is the most frugal and only sips fuel at around 5.8 to 6.0 litres/100 km. Light on fuel and easy on the environment means that the Mercedes Benz B-Class meets the modern standards of low exhaust emissions required by stringent European regulations.
You’ll find that the Mercedes Benz B Class has a wide and low stance on the road - thanks to the clever small car design incorporating a low floor height. The cabin still remains roomy, but the car’s ride height is low and balanced. Dynamic handling and directional steering are aided with newly-designed shock absorbers and a selective damping system. The suspension also reacts smoothly to minor bumps in the road, adapting the damping as required. The parabolic axle makes the suspension more stable on bends and improves wheel contact with the road.
Occupant comfort is as you would expect: excellent. The Mercedes Benz B-Class offers excellent packaging, and provides all the right equipment for a pampered drive. Let’s start from the driver’s perspective. Acceleration skid control, ESP and ABS provide impeccable control from the driver’s seat. Cruise control is a handy feature for controlling the speed of the responsive engines. Widening the scope of the talented B-Class, and I see that a funky AUDIO 20 sound system features a 5-inch colour display, in-dash 6-disc CD changer, MP3/WMA/AAC compatibility, an AM/FM dual-tuner radio and Bluetooth connectivity. An exquisite B-Class interior can be made even sharper with the spunky chrome package. I do recommend the Luxury seat package which offers Lumbar support and seat cushion angle adjustment for driver and front passenger. These seats are awesome. Seat height adjustment for front passenger is also part of the package.
Equip the B-Class out with a multi-function steering wheel, split folding rear seats with removable seat cushions, a power steering system, tinted glass all round and a premium UCI Media interface featuring iPod, USB and 3.5mm AUX-IN connectivity in the car’s glove box, and you are fully loaded.
Mercedes Benz offer the B-Class at a better pricing - now that the A-Class has had its day. Three year/unlimited kilometre warranties make owning a new small Merc a safe bet. One of the best, and most efficient, small drives around goes to the B-Class from Mercedes.
