MG 6 Plus

MG 6 Plus Fastback

MG has added a vehicle to its range that will appeal to many seeking a medium-to-large car with a fastback design for a reasonable price.  Buy the top of the range MG 6Plus and you’ll only be set back somewhere in the mid-twenties – a price that betters a lot of its main rivals.  The other trick up its sleeve is that added space, which I guess it heralds in the name MG6 Plus.

The MG 6 Plus has one of the largest and most spacious cabins in its class, and from the inside the room is certainly excellent.  Dimensions have the MG 6Plus measuring a lengthy 4561 mm, so it’s not as big as say a Honda Accord but its way better than the new Toyota Corolla and Volkswagen Golf sedans.  The news gets even better when you take a look at the boot capacity.  The MG 6 Plus has a boot space of 429 litres.  An impressive 1379 litres with the rear seats folded fits a whole lot of gear inside.

MG 6 Plus Core Interior

An MG 6 Plus cabin is smart and spacious.  While not as polished as some pricier cars, the MG 6 Plus still provides neat and tidy switchgear, comfortable seats and plenty of equipment.  Standard equipment on the base model MG 6 Plus Core models include 17-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime-running lights, LED tail-lights and electric mirrors.  Features that raise the eyebrows a little more in this price bracket are heated front seats, a leather multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, rear air vents, cruise control, push-button start, paddle shifters, an electronic park brake and rear parking sensors.  You’ll also find a rear spoiler out the back and pleasant fabric seat upholstery.

Between the top of the range and the base model sits the mid-range MG 6 Plus Soul model, and here you add things like an eight-speaker audio system, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, remote central locking, automatic headlights and wipers, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and an electronic differential.  This is some serious kit for the money.

You won’t have to argue too hard to get yourself into the top of the range MG 6 Plus Essence.  At a little over $25k you can have yourself the new flagship model with leather seats, 17-inch alloy wheels, adaptive xenon headlights with auto-levelling, front parking sensors, rear-view camera, leather trimmings, and electrically-adjustable heated front seats.

What’s an MG 6 Plus Fastback like to drive on the road?  The MG’s athletic handling doesn’t come at the expense of ride comfort, and the car does a good job of ironing out the bumps in the road.  Motorway cruising is relaxed, particularly with the long-legged sixth gear.

Under the hood is a 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine that is linked to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.  With 118 kW of power at 5500rpm and 215 Nm of torque between 2000-4500rpm, this is a responsive drive.  You can get yourself up to motorway speeds in less than 9 seconds and run onto speeds of over 200 km/h on the right piece of road – if there is such a thing.  Having stop/start engine technology keeps the fuel consumption down to an impressive average of less than 8 litres/100 km.

All MG 6 Plus models come standard with ABS, EBD, stability control, brake assist, a speed limiter, six airbags and rear Isofix child seat mounts.

So you’re all set, really.  The MG 6 Plus might just be the car you’ll be wanting to drive.
