Saab are well known in the aviation world for producing great aeroplanes, including the Viggen that was used until quite recently for NATO’s aerial patrols over the North Sea, especially as it was capable of landing and taking off from rough beaches if it needed to. And much of this engineering excellence is applied to Saab’s cars, even if the hottest of all hot Saabs can’t quite get airborne or have massive glowing afterburners.
It is this level of excellence that has seen the Saab 95 Sedan take a number of awards. The Saab 95 Sedan (and its brother the SportEstate) has been named the “Safest Car in Sweden” in 2005, and was named Best in Class in 2005 and 2006. In fact, the Saab 95 Sedan’s history is studded with safety commendations and bouquets.
So what makes the Saab 95 Sedan so safe? Well, everything. The feature that has picked up the most commendation is the SAHR (Saab Active Head Restraint) headrests, which move to catch the head and prevent whiplash during a rear-impact collision. But that’s not all. The Saab 95 Sedan’s got a safety cage system that doesn’t just provide a tough capsule between crumble zones but also is designed to deflect forces away from the passengers. The list of safety features in the Saab 95 Sedan continues with ABS brakes, EBD, traction control, ESP, driver and passenger front airbags, chest/thorax side airbags in the front, pretensioned seatbelts in the front... and child restraint points already fixed. Because the Saab 95 Sedan is designed to be a family-friendly car. The Aero model of Saab 95 Sedan adds in bi-xenon levelling headlights to maximise safety during night driving.
Saab seems to put greater emphasis on its safety features than on its performance figures, which makes a refreshing change from a lot of the in-yer-face muscle cars. This is not to say, however, that the Saab 95 Sedan is a snail-paced and boring shopping trolley with all the get up and go of a sofa. On the contrary. The Aero engine fitted in the Saab 95 Sedan Aero may be “just” a 2.3 litre with “just” 191 kW of power but it has plenty to torque about: a whopping 350 Nm at 1800 rpm or 20 seconds of 370 Nm with the turboboost function. Turn green, Ford and Holden! But if you’re the one turning green rather than the muscle cars, then the Saab 95 Sedan comes with a BioPower ecofuel variant that runs on E85 or petrol and sees the torque curve peaking at 280 Nm throughout the 2000–4300 rpm range.
The Saab 95 Sedan has another of engine choice as well as the Aero and the Biopower units already mentioned. The Saab 95 Sedan Linear has either the 1.9 TDI diesel unit (standard) or the Biopower, while the Saab 95 Sedan has the 2.3T 191 kW High Output Turbo (abbreviated to HOT, which says it all). Automatic transmission is the order of the day engines, with the 2.3 litre variants having a 5-speed Sentronic transmission, while 1.9 litre has a regular 5-speed auto. The 1.9 litre diesel has a particle filter to keep emissions down.
As well as considering the engine, if you’re hesitating between the Saab 95 Sedan Linear and the Aero, the interior features should be one of the key deciding factors. But even the Saab 95 Sedan Linear has leather seats (the Aero has special Aero leather), steering wheel mounted audio controls, “follow me home” lights, automatic climate control, a cooled glovebox (perfect for chocolate), heated front seats (with heated rear seats as an option) and parking assist. The Saab 95 Sedan Aero goes beyond this with electric front seats (the driver’s seat has a memory function, too), an electric sunroof, and tinted metallic fascia and door trim.
The exterior is another place to see the difference between the Saab 95 Sedan Linear and the Aero, with the Aero having 17-inch alloy wheels where the Linear has 16 inches, a sports exhaust. But even the Linear boasts front foglights in the impressive looking front end, as well as body coloured door handles and mirrors.
Oh yes – the Saab 95 Sedan Aero has a sports chassis where the Linear has just a regular chassis. This may be the clincher if you like a sportier drive rather than a more comfortable one. Not that the Aero isn’t comfortable; it just gives the feedback and response you need.
The current model series includes the:
- Saab 95 Sedan Linear 1.9 TDI
- Saab 95 Sedan Linear Biopower
- Saab 95 Sedan Aero
