Zipping around glitzy city streets in a small French car is oodles of fun. French cars look good, are comfortable to sit in and they are often some of the most frugal vehicles around. So what’s it like to drive the new Peugeot 207? My latest driving trip into the city during business hours meant that under no circumstances should I leave a safe distance between me and the car in front or the safe space would be filled in by somebody else! A Peugeot 207 is a nimble car that responds beautifully on the throttle, responds beautifully under braking and slips in and out of gaps with a quick response to any turns on the steering wheel. This makes city driving a breeze. The car is well balanced on the road, and the ride over road undulations is superb.
Power comes from eight lively engines. Let’s start with the quickest. The GTi 207 has a very feisty 128 kW on tap, and when you combine this with 240 Nm of torque being linked to a five-speed manual gearbox, the little car can fly. Seven seconds to 100 km/h from a standstill will give many bigger sports cars a right hurry up! Where the little Pug will throw a pie into the face of bigger sports cars is on the tight twisty stuff out of town. The chassis is simply outstanding, which makes the grip and cornering speed massively fun. The Peugeot 207 GT model is almost as quick. Both of these sporty engines are petrol powered. The very efficient 1.4 litre 55kW and 1.4 litre 65 kW petrol engines in the XR models provide low cost running. So to does the 88 kW 1.6 litre petrol motor. The perfect engine that offers a fine blend of sporty driving and fuel efficiency is found in the highly recommended 1.6 litre turbo-diesel models. These have a smooth engine that is responsive and very frugal. Ten seconds is all it takes to pull from standstill through to 100 km/h, and the average fuel economy figures are extremely low. The turbo-diesel versions can easily record less than 5 litres/100 km. Modern times and fuel price rises make the diesel models a very tasty new-car proposition for any new-car buyer who is seeking a small motor vehicle.
The new Peugeot 207 is larger than the 206. It has a wider cabin, making the cabin space impressive for rear seat occupants. These cars are one of the largest cars in their class. Being around four metres long and 1300kg in weight, the Peugeot 207 is a stylish motor car that is not only very roomy but is also extremely safe. Three and five door hatchback models are available. There is also the very suave cabriolet model that is sure to pull the onlooker’s attention your way.
The Peugeot 207 is a great option for the commuter and small family. There are loads of luxury items inside the very fresh interior. The unique style uses high quality materials and colour schemes that are not only nice to touch but they are very pleasing on the eye. The wing shaped instrument panel is ergonomically excellent. The 207 interior is packed with up-to-date technology. A trip computer, dual zone climate control and a 6-speaker CD sound system that has steering mounted controls are part of the little Frenchman’s package. These sorts of items add an air of French sophistication and class to the 207. Some of the models boast an automatic-dipping rear view mirror, rain sensing front wipers, automatic headlights and an awesome satellite navigation system. All the usual luxury items can be found onboard the very up-to-date 207. The accommodating seats offer plenty of room.
The five star EuroNCAP Tested 2006 Peugeot 207 can make the 2008 buyer very confident that the advanced design and technology, used in the current model, will be outstanding.
Spoil yourself and own the best. Peugeot stands by their product; and will therefore offer the owner of a brand new Peugeot 207 a 3 year/100 000 km warranty. Could you own this one? Without hesitation, the reply is a very definite yes.
