Audi A5 Review

Audi has long been a significant player in the luxury and executive saloon market, combining old-fashioned excellence and craftsmanship with modern technological advancement. The Audi A5 is the latest in this fine tradition of engineering excellence. Built to rival BMW’s 3-series, the Audi A5 is a two-door sports luxury coupe that is truly an object of desire.

 

 

The exterior looks of the Audi A5 are a contradiction that is beguilingly harmonious. At first glance, the Audi A5 seems modern and chunky, but as you take a second glance (which you undoubtedly will), the Audi A5 reveals lines of grace and fluidity that somehow turn the chunkiness into something sleeker. There’s a trace of the warrior princess in the Audi A5 with this combination of muscular aggression with classic beauty. Similarly, you could look at the Audi A5 for quite a while, trying to decide whether its lines are detailed or whether they’re simple.

 

 

But you’ll also want to do more than just look at the exterior styling of the Audi A5, impressive as it is. And you’ll want to do more than just look at the Audi A5’s interior, too. The Audi A5 has a yummy-looking interior, featuring trim in nutmeg, walnut or aluminium along with the leather-upholstered seats that look almost marshmallow-like in their voluptuousness. They look positively edible and beg to be sat in. The designers at Audi were asked to make the A5 suitable for long drives, and that’s exactly how comfortable the Audi A5 is.

 

 

The handling in the Audi A5 is smooth and crisp. You may have seen the advertisement that shows two Audi A5s manoeuvring a sports kite. As far as I can tell, this seems to be the real McCoy with no trick photography, and the Audi A5 handles that responsively and gracefully. Combine this with responsive eight-speed multitronic suspension, and you’ve got quite a drive.

 

 

Under the aristocratic bonnet lies a choice of three power-plants.  Not far from Aussie showrooms is the 3.0 litre TDI diesel engine that has been tested and rated as the cleanest diesel engine in the world with ultra-low emissions.  This unit is not only clean and environmentally friendly but (more to the point)  is capable of speeding the Audi A5 from 0–62mph in a purported 5.9 seconds (six speed manual version; the tiptronic does it in 6.1 seconds) thanks to the 240 PS of power and massive 500 Nm of torque.   Alternatively (and already in showrooms), you can select a 3.2 litre FSI V6 petrol version that is silky smooth, and as beautifully refined as it is swift. Leading the charge is the Audi A5 S5.  Priced at around $130,000.00, with the S5 you are certainly getting a fair bit of kit - not to mention German speed and excellence.  Boasting a V8 4.2 litre motor, a 6-speed manual, 260 kW , 440 Nm of torque and AWD, you and your classy S5 will cover the ground very quickly.  No need to be late for the boardroom meetings - that's for sure! 

 

 

All the classic safety features we’ve come to expect in top-quality European cars are there on the Audi A5: the airbags (dual-stage driver and front passenger, and side), the stability package (ABS, EBD, Traction control and brake assist), the pretensioned force-limiter seatbelts. The Audi A5 also features Hold Assist for tricky stops and starts on steep slopes.

 

 

The Audi A5’s no slouch in the technological or audio front, either. The standard audio package includes 10 speakers and a six-disk stereo system – with the audio controls mounted on the multifunction leather-wrap steering wheel and the 6.5 inch colour display screen. You’ve got triple-zone climate control to keep you cool, and an optional navigation package to keep you on track.
