BMW 520i

A bit of a soft touch in the BMW line-up is the BMW 520i. The 520i is one of those cars that has everything you need, in just the right amounts. If there was one car that could be described as being the complete medium-size car, the BMW 520i could take the top honours.

Room inside the BMW 520i is good. If your size is above average, then the 520i knows how to manage your dimensions with apt talent. Reasonable leg room, and good shoulder and head room allow for this to happen. Open the boot lid, and there is a competitive swag of room to swallow suitcases, sports gear and plenty of large shopping items. 

Always an atmosphere of luxury, the cabin in the BMW 520i is nicely finished. The glass has heat and sun protection glazing, so the hot sunshine need not bother you at all in the 520i’s serene, modern environment. A quiet ride provides a relaxed feel to the way the BMW 520i goes about its business, and it is easy to hold a conversation between front and rear occupants. If the conversation fades away, then the premium six-speaker audio system can take over and play your favourite music pieces. 

Need to ring a client or friend, BMW has equipped the 520i with Bluetooth, which enables wireless connection of a compatible Bluetooth mobile phone to the vehicle. And, yes it’s safe because the hands free facility is an excellent safety feature.  There are some other cool features: Bluetooth audio streaming and the ability to, at any given time, have two mobile phones and 1 audio player running via Bluetooth technology. 

Need to alter the temperature inside? A quiet and effective two-zone automatic air-conditioning system can take that task over. How about getting yourself comfortable behind the wheel? The BMW 520i has some of the most comfortable seats you’ll find – short of your lounge lazy boy. Electronic seat adjustment for the front passengers makes it easy to get the precise position. 

To look at, the new BMW 5 Series exterior design is stunning. The lines are so smooth, sporty and swoony. This 5 Series design is far from ostentatious, and cognizant to the fact that in-your-face is not what the bulk of the public want, BMW has created a near perfect creation of elegance. Options are there, of course, for those of you who may want to flame it up a bit. A beaut M Sport package includes: 18 or 19-inch M light-alloy wheels featuring a double-spoke design, high-gloss shadow line, a BMW individual anthracite roof-liner, sport seats, door sill finishers with M designation, exhaust pipes finished in dark chrome, an interior trim finished in aluminium hexagon style, an M aerodynamics exterior package, an M leather steering wheel and a tuned M sport suspension.

In standard form, the BMW 520i has the perfect blend of ride comfort, and sharp, accurate road holding. Under the bonnet lies just the right amount of fun. With power peaking at 135 kW, and plenty of pulling power at 270 Nm, the four-cylinder BMW 520i puts the power down quickly and efficiently through a slick eight-speed automatic to the rear wheels. With a 0-100 km/h sprint of around 8.0 seconds, this should be quick enough for smiling.

Very safe, great to drive and efficient, the BMW 520i is arguably the best mid-sizer out there. Pricing is a little on the steep side, however. But if you’re looking seriously at the blue propeller, then price won’t be an issue.
